Rolex are so good at their game that you can only appreciate what ten grand gets you when you try this San Martin SN0017 ($250). A slightly better clasp, a slightly better movement (but same beat rate and calibrated and tested in 6 positions). Microscopically better finishing and all the trademarks.

This Berny AM439M-GRN is a false compressor, meaning the timing bezel rotates internally with a locking knob. This makes for a watch that can be dressed up on a steel strap, but is still functional as a dive watch. It wasn't expensive either at $111, plus another $8 for shipping.

This Orient Mako III "Kamasu" is what I'd call a working man's tool watch. $430 new, I paid $65 for this used example. The washed out red anodising goes well with my Autumn wardrobe and it's a full-spec day-date automatic diver by a respected Japanese brand. Review: wahawatches.com/in-depth-rev...

Watchdives have outdone themselves with this Explorer clomage. It's a touch lighter than I remember of the original but pretty much everything about this is perfect. I urge caution as it's made me badly desire the Rolex. If you have better self-control than I, buy this instead (it cost me $109).

This IWC Ingineur clone cost me $84.95 shipped. It's a great design, compact and elegant with an integrated strap. I skipped the steel strap and the balance is still good, but the replacement is silicone, which is a dust magnet. The olive waffle dial looks sharp. Excellent.

This is my second Watchdives WD1863, a 39mm Chronograph with VK63 quartz movement. This version has a colourway vaguely reminiscent of the Omega Flight Qualified, though that has only two sub dials. Of course this only cost me $120; about right for a fun watch.

In Japan you can't just smoke on the street. You have to find a designated smoking spot. These include some of the most beautiful and most dreary places.

I'm obsessed with Japanese architectural textures.

Even in a Japanese major city, it was hard to find The Citizen. This is the AQ4091-56M Eco-Drive watch with an indigo-dyed washi paper dial and "Super Titanium" case and bracelet, the nicest varient on display. $3,000 for a chintzy mall watch?

Watch (window) shopping in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. There's no such thing as a tatty second hand watch on display. They must all be lightly worn or polished. I sell the same stuff for a lot less, so wasn't tempted.

I love this scene of the canal in Osaka and the crowded shopping streets. It's consumerism and the rat race taken to extremes, but fun to visit. Exhausting too. I'm back in HK, sipping tea alone by the pool in dry 26°C weather with a renewed sense of appreciation for what I have.

Yesterday was the grand opening of a photo book store, a floor below in the same building where my darkroom is located. The open house is running most of this month.

Today I'm wearing a Watchdives WD1969 PRO in 316L stainless steel with a VH31 sweep seconds quartz movement. Patterned after a Tudor Pelagos 39, it breaks from the mould with a white chapter ring for flair and an aluminum bezel. A quality, fun, always ready watch that cost only $98 delivered.

Here's another San Martin in collaboration with Watchdives, the SN0121T-GA with titanium head, strap and clasp. It's based on the Tudor Pelagos 39, like my Pelagos 500m but downsized from 42mm case size to 39mm for comfortable daily wear. I love the finish, bezel action and the matte ceramic bezel

It's hard to express just how perfect this San Martin SN0128-G is. It cost $212 (before the 11/11 sale) It pays homage to the Tudor Black Bay m7941a1a0nu, which many argue is what the Rolex no date sub should have evolved into. It's the sweet spot for a daily diver; a one and done for active wear.

Two 80s/90s para smocks I got from Book Off, Osaka for only JPY3,600 (under 18 quid) each. I'm delighted. It reminds me of the SASS (brand) sniper smock I used to wear bushcrafting 20 years ago, but without the elbow pads and crotch flap. But I'm too old (& too young) for lying in the dirt anyway.
