Philadelphia Flyers beat writer/podcaster for PHLY Sports.
OK, there's the Jett Luchanko we need to see if he wants to make the roster. Nice pass to Sanheim on that goal. Also, Grebenkin always just seems to be setting a screen in front at the right time, no? 1-1 now.

Luchanko isn't exactly having a "I need to be on the big club" performance thus far in the first. He's had quite a few d-zone turnovers.

I'm not covering today's Flyers game in person (I'll be watching on TV). But it's obviously noteworthy that Luchanko, Abols and Juulsen are in the lineup after sitting out Thursday but Dennis Gilbert is not. Might he be the odd man out of the bubble guys? One more cut is needed.

With only one Flyers preseason game to go, it sure seems like Nikita Grebenkin and Adam Ginning have locked up roster spots. Egor Zamula will be on the final roster, too. But his struggles garnered a telling response from Rick Tocchet on Thursday night:

I mean, Luchanko was healthy enough to be cleared for the start of training camp, and that was two weeks ago. And also, he skated in warmups and practiced in full today. If he was really injured, wouldn't he be sitting out entirely?

Pretty uneventful first period, aside from the great Dvorak pass to set up Sanheim's SHG. Ersson looks strong, he's seeing the puck well. Grebenkin (especially) and Ginning are doing nothing to blow their chances of making the big club. 1-0 Flyers.

Egor Zamula clearly came into camp with a roster spot locked up. But man, he hasn't played in preseason like a player who should be a lock. Turnovers for days.

Nice shift by Grebenkin. I imagine he's basically a roster lock at this point, but if he's still on the bubble, he continues to help his case so far tonight.

Even if Christian Dvorak technically slots into the lineup as the 4C, he's not going to be getting the minutes of a fourth liner. Lots of PK time and a bunch of extra shifts as wing on other lines. My guess is the nightly TOI charts will have him firmly in the "top-9."

Dvorak getting first crack at replacing Poehling on PK1 with Hathaway. And he does something with it! Beautiful little trick drop pass to Sanheim on a shorthanded rush and just like that, Sanheim scores and the Flyers lead 1-0.

I'm not gonna lie, I don't get why Luchanko isn't playing tonight. If you've decided he's making the team, why not give him time with his likely Game 1 linemates? If you've decided he isn't, why not just send him back now? If you're on the fence, why not get another look at him?

What is new Flyers assistant coach Jay Varady's role on the staff? Yes, he'll be helping coach the forwards & working w/Yogi Ĺ vejkovskĂ˝ on fixing the PP. But he'll also be bringing his extensive analytics knowledge to the table. My feature on Varady:

After his game on Mon, I thought Abols had locked down a roster spot. But after Tocchet's comments yesterday that he'd like to keep 8 d-men, I'm less confident. Might they send Abols back to start the year to keep Jett? Tocchet's comments today on Abols didn't sound committal:

This article still very much applies even after the Gaucher cut, because I gave him by far the lowest odds of making the big club. My thoughts on who the remaining favorites are, my belief that Emil Andrae didn't get a fair shot, and Alex Bump's future:

The Flyers made 11 cuts earlier today, bringing their camp roster down to 25 in total. - Who are the favorites to win roster spots now? - Fair to question Emil Andrae's fit in PHI? - 14F/7D, or 13F/8D? - Is Luchanko trending towards winning a spot?

So reading into this lines, it looks like Grebenkin and Ginning are looking good to make the team. I can't imagine Abols isn't on the final roster at least as an extra. That would leave two battles: Luchanko vs. Gaucher, Juulsen vs. Gilbert.

If we assume these players in Group 1 today are on the outside looking in for roster spots, that means: Grebenkin, Abols, Luchanko and Gaucher are battling for 3 forward spots. Ginning, Juulsen and Gilbert battling for 2 D spots. I guess they could go 13F/8D too.

Tocchet on Luchanko: "He's got elite speed. The puckhandling, the scoring will come. Just want to get him a little more aggressive when he has the puck, to shoot the puck. I think he passes too much. But overall I think when you've got tools he has, there's a lot to work with."

Lot of guys impressed for the Flyers in that one. Dan Vladar at the top of the list. The whole Foerster line looked good. Abols was great, should be a roster lock now. Luchanko had his best preseason game of camp. Ginning did what he had to do to impress the decision-makers.

Grebenkin is who turned the puck over in the lead-up to that Boston goal, but rewatching the play, Hunter McDonald kinda closed in on his own teammate and put him in a really tough spot with the puck. Not sure how much of that TO I even pin on Grebenkin.

Worth remembering that Abols has played five games in nine days -- every single preseason game thus far -- and he's still pulling off plays like that. You've got to put him on the final roster. He deserves it.
