Thomas hadn’t heard from his daughter Malia in weeks. Then she called from a police station after escaping abuse while staying with her mother. With Legal Aid’s help, Thomas secured custody and protection for her. Today, Malia is safe, back in school, and beginning to heal.

The first rainbow flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, along with Lynn Segerblom, James McNamara, and other activists. Harvey Milk asked them to create a symbol for LGBTQ+ people that had a positive meaning behind it. Gilbert Baker was born in Chanute, KS and grew up in Parsons, KS.
