Filling the gaps in my #seed stash stage 1 complete! I've grown two of these before: Telephone peas are the only maincrop for me, 8ft tall and weighed down with pods. And Bleu de Solaise is a lovely leek with slate blue leaves. The others are exciting and new! I will report back 😊 #gardening 🌱

I walk past these badger burrows every day. They're right at the side of a lane in the banks under the hedgerows and I love to imagine the badgers inside all snuggled up and cosy. The earth is regularly moved and fresh - I think they must have a clear out from time to time #badgerhousework

Fresh home grown well into winter 💚 top & tail a Stripetti squash, microwave whole 5 mins. Fry a chopped onion, add toms, salt pepper & herbs. Cut the squash in half, scoop out seeds, fill with onion/tom mix & top with cheese, roast 30 mins @180C. Eat from the skins #nomnom #recipe #gardening 🌱

Spent yesterday dealing with the Xmas decorations & relishing that this year we went natural so I can recycle it all via the dead hedge in my garden 💚 conifer branches, dried orange and apple slices, holly, real tree all chopped up and on their way to feeding the soil #gardening #sustainability 🌱

Last task on the #seed stash sort is a list of seed I already have so I use up existing seed before buying more. Most packs hold far more seed than you can use even in 2-3 yrs & that often means waste: companies like MoreVeg moreveg.co.uk do smaller packs so u can buy only what you need #gardening 🌱

It's not pretty but it does the job 😂 This box is so ancient it's actually an old floppy disc holder (remember those? 😂) but it's just the right size for seed packets. Add dividers for each month, "file" seed packets under the month you want to sow them, and you're ready for the year 💚 #gardening 🌱

Buying #sustainable #seed can be a minefield. Most commercial seed is bred and collected overseas, with a high carbon footprint to match. Then there's packaging. If it's shiny like this one, the paper has been plasticised to make it waterproof - better than pure #plastic, but still not great... 1/3

Seed packet dates: they're flexible. "Sow by" dates are 2-3 years from packing - stick to this for carrots & parsnips, but brassicas can go to 4-5 years and tomatoes up to 8 years without much loss of viability if stored well. Home saved #seeds last an extra year on top #gardening #growyourown

A day for indoor #gardening today 😂 so I pulled out my seed stash for a good sort out. Chucked out packets which are old or contain only a few seeds - I've reduced the pile by half!
