Site-to-site VPNs aren’t hard anymore. We shouldn’t be hearing about incidents like this. Ever. Default credentials aside, there is literally no reason to expose these devices to the open internet.

I put the thread adapter in a Yellowtec CamStud backwards and picked up a new battle scar trying to get it out so I could flip it around. Those threads are sharp! #BroadcastEngineering

Update: I ended up writing a bespoke ALSA card profile and udev rules which succeeded at exposing the sinks I needed, but the volume controls for the card’s hardware mixer are still a puzzle to be solved in PipeWire.

I’ve been trying (and failing) to get PipeWire+WirePlumber to play nice with an AudioScience ASI6114. The vendor-provided ALSA driver exposes subdevices for each of the 12 play streams, but the ALSA monitor in WirePlumber only creates a node for subdevice 0. 🫠

I mean you could still really hurt someone with an RE20 even though microphones don’t weigh 30 pounds anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️

Broadcast technology has always believed in and embraced interoperability. In that spirit, I’ve just migrated this account to an ATProto PDS *not* operated by Bluesky PBC. How exciting!

Just so I’ve said it: Broadcast networks in the United States (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc.) do not require licenses of their own to operate. Network programming is delivered primarily via satellite downlink and IP transport.

The first Debian 13 hosts are going up in the lab. As more broadcast vendors begin delivering software rather than specialized hardware, the reliability of the Linux kernel and other Unix-like systems can help make working with these new software offerings more like their hardware counterparts.

Contrary to popular belief, traditional/over-the-air #broadcasting is not stuck in the past. We just know and appreciate where we came from.

This is Genesys: For years it was possibly the most sophisticated radio playout system, & the backbone of UK commercial radio. Until recently, Absolute, Capital, Heart, Smooth & Radio X used it thanks to its ability to play different audio at once in different places! Its design was… idiosyncratic.

I do broadcast radio, but we do have licenses in other services at the station for our own operations, so as chief operator, I'm responsible for reviewing frequency coordination notices. A lot of them came in over the weekend. A very magenta mobile operator is putting in loads of wireless backhaul.

It’s a rainy day in Cincinnati and I’m stopping at all my tower sites with technicians from the local telco to re-label switch ports for a VPLS circuit cutover tonight. If I’m lucky, and by that I mean my switch ports auto-negotiate, I won’t have to come back tonight!

For 2025, I think I finally get how to do NAB Show correctly and I’m showing up early enough to attend the Nautel NUG@NAB forum. In years past, I’d be landing at LAS about halfway through the conference. Not this time!

I gave a tour of the station to a group of tech-oriented folks (including teachers) from a local school district today. It was fulfilling for everyone: the adults asked the bulk of the questions, but I was really here for seeing speechless amazement and the gears turning in a student’s brain.

The studio is coming back together… so you must know that means I have some new stuff up my sleeve. (Hans is a better supervisor than he is a helper.)

It’s early on a Sunday and that means it’s a great time to have our studio facility generator load tested!

Booked my flight and hotel for NAB Show ‘25! I can only handle Vegas once a year at the most, so the physical manifestation of Christmas for broadcasters is a worthy excuse to go.
