Kind of a short review, although I guess its fitting for a short game. It was a fun time, though, even if I didn't have a whole lot of substance to say about it. Looking forward to trying out some other Sgt M/Torch60 stuff in the future.

Finding out that the lead artist/character designer for the Fuga games is not only on Bluesky but that they're taking commissions might actually be the most excited I've been about anything all year

I received a request via Skeb from Steyr. bsky.app/profile/stey... The request was for a birdwatching scene. Looking at their account, I saw many wonderful bird photographs, which showed how serious they are about the subject. I felt that I needed to be careful with the details to do them justice.

Ara Fell- polished and pretty, but kind of iconically average overall. The most "that sure is a game" JRPG I've played in ages.

Ara Fell may be the first 2D game I've seen (or the first RPG in any case) that properly balances the "glare" level from a cloud layer underneath a dark area like this, it's a very nice and subtle effect

Doesn't hold up quite as well after nearly 20 years, but it's still a pretty average game- one of those titles with a killer first act that suddenly realizes "oh shit I'm a JRPG" and falls down a flight of stairs trying to cram in lousy genre expectations instead of building on its strengths.

Totally forgot that in addition to being the first actually good news in like 10 years the Artemis II mission means we get more completely breathtaking photos from beyond Earth Orbit (photo by Reid Wiseman)

I have realized, going through steam every now and then over the last few months, that we've reached the point where every single AI generated image looks the exact fucking same. (Which is good, really- the red flags are now apparently inescapably built in to the process)

What is perhaps one of, if not *the* most overrated game(s) of all time. At this point it's clear I will maybe never, ever understand the Mother and Mother-like people.

It's crazy because so many incredibly good SNES RPGs came out before EB too. Even the series its riffing the most on, Dragon Quest- like, Dragon Quest V came out two years earlier and it's about a billion times better. There's zero excuse for how miserable this is.

This is really turning out to be one of those Breath of Fire 2 "you can't account for taste" things. Some people really do just like bad games.

Finally got around to finishing @unityrpg.bsky.social's WaUTaH. Only took me 6 years this time! A lot faster than Hero's Realm. It's a good little game- snappy, full of heart and charm. Gave me a lot to think about in regards to a certain "weight" that can be hit or miss in games.

I was wondering what name I had when I did some shit for WaUtaH, but it looks like Unity covered her bases and gave me both at the same time (and a portrait too, how about that)

Mystic Quest is expectedly pretty dumpy but it did help me demarcate the line between "boring bad" and "infuriating bad" pretty well (this was the former)

Learning while playing through Mystic Quest that Katsuya Terada of all people also did art for this one (which kind of tracks, given he iirc did FF4 based art for Nintendo Power around that time) The man can make even the dorkiest of babby's-first-RPGs look metal as fuck though 😩

Here's a hot tip: Don't play Contact.

Combining the DS-era cuteness of "tell the game about your hobbies and interests" with cutesy little diorama renders is a super vibe for Contact so far

Just an absolutely, totally fantastic game. It's hard to believe that there was ever so much flak thrown at it back in the day (at least from what I remember, anyways). Happy to have finally finished it, and at a point in my life I can actually appreciate the subtler aspects it thrives on.

I have no idea at the moment how I'm gonna write an actual review of FFX now... But for the moment just. Holy shit, what a game. I can't believe I waited this long to finish it. Just rock solid in every aspect, even the oft lambasted "bad parts" are still like *pretty* good. Incredible stuff.

I'm enjoying the story a lot more this time around, but it will never not be infuriating that this room full of heavily armed guardians simply *lets Tromell leave with Seymour's body* instead of saying "No, we're sending him" and nipping it in the bud

Replaying it now, it feels very unsurprising that the majority opinion of Blitzball in FFX (at the time at least) was "this sucks and makes no sense" when like a) it's introduced with a tutorial wall, b) it plays unlike any sports game ever made and c) the first match is almost a guaranteed loss

For a while I had no idea what to do after SLAR/Tail Concerto, unexpectedly ran through most of the stuff I wanted to play ASAP in the New Year really fast for various reasons... So I suppose it's a good time to finally finish off the "classic" FF games and get back to X after 10 years or so
