This old Horse Chestnut tree has stories to tell. It is obviously a pollard i. e. the top has been taken off it, at least once. This is a way to continue collecting timber from a tree on a cycle of cutting and regrowth. Each cut effectively resets the aging clock so pollards can live to extreme age.
