Yesterday I listened to a 40-minute podcast about pencils. Today I am listening to the @davidpierce.xyz and the vergecast about markdown and I could not be happier. I feel like I am becoming the nerd I was meant to be!

I'm starting a digital garden. Not because I have to, but because I want a place where things can be unfinished and broken. The polished version of me lives on YouTube and Substack. I think having a pursuit that is fun but with no real end goal is important.

Running a productivity app is actually really hard and as someone who reviews apps, that is easy to forget.

VS Code is a hidden gem as a note-taking app. Add the Foam plugin and you get backlinks and a graph view.

@supernotes.app is still one of the most underrated note taking apps!

When everyone was talking about prompt engineering, Tana was building a knowledge graph. Now everyone's talking about AI chat, and Tana is betting on agents and agentic workflows. They were early last time. I think they're early again.

The old Tana required a PhD to use. Supertags, the daily page, nodes... I needed multiple YouTube deep-dives just to get started. The new Tana is plug and play. Connect it to a meeting and it organizes everything — tasks, ideas, projects. That's what PKM should have been all along.

I've been annoyed by apps that pivot. But maybe I've been wrong. When Tana launched, AI was a chatbot. Now AI can actually do things for us. That changes what a PKM tool needs to be. The new Tana makes that bet. I think it's the right one.

A design team goes from 4 designers to 2 because of AI. That's a 50% loss of revenue for Adobe from that one company alone. Now multiply that across every company using Creative Cloud. You can see why investors are nervous.

Kosmik and Spaceduck both shut down. Clover got acquired. Walling almost died. Visual note-taking apps keep failing while local-first PKM apps like Obsidian, Octarine, and Thymer keep growing. The market has picked a side, and it isn't the collaborative whiteboard. #PKM #ProductivityApps

Sneaker companies are AI companies now, and Anthropic releasing Claude Design made the Figma stock drop. What a time to be alive.

Right now I think the most interesting note-taking apps are things like Sublime and MyMind.

One of the ways I ended up beating my phone addiction was swapping the phone for things like painting, drawing, and making leather goods. I really believe in doing something physical for those of us who work in an office.

For the first month of this year, I forgot that Evernote still exists.

Note-taking apps have been falling like dominoes lately, and I think it will just continue. We've had too many for a while now.

The people saying everyone will just build their own apps with AI are the exact people who think in systems. Most people don't. They just want something that works.

Nilay Patel from the verge calls it "software brain." It's the tendency to see everything in your life as a system that software can solve. Most people don't think that way. And that's exactly why AI won't replace SaaS apps anytime soon.

Everyone's asking: will AI kill SaaS? I don't think so. But I do think we're watching a lot of apps quietly panic trying to figure out their role.

I have noticed something really interesting. The more I use AI, the more I start using notebooks as well.

I have written a lot about AI scepticism lately, but I am not an AI sceptic. I just feel like we need more nuance in the discussion.

I think the best thing you can do in an AI age is to build a hybrid productivity system. The analog part is for your brain, and the digital one is for the AI.

Do you think that articles written using only dictation apps like Whispr Flow are okay?

I think the future of PKM is apps that help us think, not traditional note-taking apps. Keep in mind that I am only guessing, but that is my guess.
