Films past, present, & yet-conceived are discussed here. Kindness first, and always
Tonight's film pick: Returner (Dir. Takashi Yamazaki, 2002) didn't get much acclaim on release, but it's a great time-travel action movie, despite lacking the depth of something like Looper (Dir. Rian Johnson, 2012) or the exceptional Primer (Dir. Shane Carruth, 2004). A solid watch.

Battle Beyond the Stars (Dir. Jimmy T. Murakami, 1980) Riding the wave of Star Wars, this sci-fi spin on Seven Samurai far exceeded its premise. The set design and effects were no mere Star Wars rip-off, but a carefully considered, designed & executed space opera. (Also James Cameron's big break)

As well as being a great indie horror, Backrooms also perfectly captures that feeling I have when I walk in to a room and don't remember why. If you like the film, spread the word and signal boost fresh filmmaking talent.

The (deserved) success of Backrooms (Dir. Kane Parsons, 2026), has made me think about my younger years when I made short films. Nothing spurred me on faster than Rebel Without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez. Technology developments aside, it still holds up in spirit and motivation. A great read.

2046 (Dir. Wong Kar-wai, 2004) Exceptional cinematography, non-traditional story telling, and a particularly exceptional performance from Tony Leung Chiu-wai. This is not your normal sci-fi film, and worth your time as a representation of Wong Kar-wai's narrative and storytelling style.

So you're in for a cheesy, yet satisfying 80s film? Gleaming the Cube (Dir. Graeme Clifford, 1989) was peak Christian Slater. Questionable editing, and a script that sounds like a rejected Miami Vice script.. this film still is an enjoyable romp, and worth the price of admission.

As we all gear up to play 007 First Light, it's a fun time to watch some possibly-overlooked recent(ish) Spy Film gems: All the Old Knives (dir. Janus Metz Pedersen, 2020) Black Back (dir. Steven Soderbergh, 2025) The Recruit (dir. Roger Donaldson, 2003) Spy Game (dir. Tony Scott, 2001)

They say a film is made 3 times. First in the script, then in the production & direction, and finally in the editing. But how radically can a film change when one discipline is distinctly different than the other two? Nerdwriter examines this excellently:

Tonight's abstract pick for you all is The Lookout (dir. Scott Frank 2007) Criminally underrated film with a great central performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and an unbelievably good supporting cast. Part heist film, part psychological drama, this film doesn't disappoint.

My first post on this platform should encapsulate me, my politics, my belief system, my goals, my aspirations, my world view, my journey as a human being. So here it is: F*ck the Seahawks.
