an additional side effect to ohio's new laws this week is I no longer exist :)

Did some testing this morning - Bluesky remains the only site that has noticeably implemented age verification features in response to Ohio's new law.

connecting to a vpn (even to another state in the US) is still enough to circumvent it for now, thank fuck. not sure what the language of the law is regarding the legality of that - I'll have to check tomorrow when it actually goes into effect.

So @bluesky is a porn site under yet another vague Republican law snuck into the OH budget! My DMs were hostage TODAY, Sept 29 unless I verified. MEANWHILE the deadline for Congressional redistricting to revise unconstitutional maps is also TOMORROW & Republicans haven’t presented a map yet.

Age verification laws aside, one thing I will say is that none of the other apps have locked my DMs. I understand Bluesky has no choice but to comply, but this feels incredibly overboard for what the law actually requires. Nothing about the Ohio law demands that direct messaging be locked.
