What a tragedy. An essential part of the ecosystem, not a threat to humans (which doesn't mean they won't nip you if you get in their way but really just interested in fish), and beautiful in their own right.

Lower numbers than thought, and a slow rate of increase may not be enough to buffer against ongoing impacts from fishing, and the rapidly warming waters on the east coast which could alter habitats and prey distribution around sites they aggregate and breed at.
