Wow – our 20th anniversary year has been packed full of amazing projects. Thanks to everyone who has got involved, been a part of, or come and seen what we’ve been up to. We started the year with Graveney School studying us for their A-levels.

And so our 20th anniversary look back arrives at our 20th year. And 2025 has been a busy one: We’ve created Orpheus and the Underworld in #Weymouth, The Myths of the Marshes in #Purfleetonthames and a version of Macbeth lit only by moonlight in the Dorset woods.

For our 20th anniversary we’re up to October 2024 and our commission from Start Thurrock which led to The Mystery of The Missing Market in #SouthOckendon. We asked hundreds of locals what a show in the area should be about.

Our 20th Anniversary look back is catching up with us, as we’re up to 2024! We made ‘Common’ – a walking show about the history and stories of Land ownership which travelled through the streets and green spaces of #ForestHill and #Sydenham. #theatre #sitespecific #sitespecifictheatre

We’ve reached 2022 in our 20th anniversary look back. We made ‘Dangerous Games’ in Forest Hill and then in 2023 brought it to Deptford and Weymouth. Based on Dangerous Liaisons we started with a gig that goes wrong and took the audience to “break into” a building for the rest of the show.

Our 20th anniversary celebrations are up to 2022 when we created the Love Police – some pop-up characters for #weddings who interviewed all the guests to find out how the bride and groom had stolen all the love. Thanks especially to Kate and Ofei for including us in their amazing wedding.

For our 20th anniversary look back we’ve got to London Borough of Culture 2022 – Lewisham when we were commissioned as Artists of Change. For 6 months we were embedded with the Climate resilience team at Lewisham Council, we sent our Usherettes out to speak to people on the streets of all 19 wards.

Our 20th anniversary celebrations have reached ‘The Regulars’ – our tour of pubs and village halls across the UK. Originally commissioned by Inn Crowd we’ve brought characters to life in 22 places from Falmouth to Preston, with tales of what stories remain behind in the pub after you’ve left.

For our 20th anniversary look back we’re still in 2021. In Forest Hill we created ‘Tales from the Common’ in Albion Millennium Green and programmed a series of gigs and workshops as part of our Creative happenings programme supported by Lewisham’s Creative Enterprise Zone and SHAPESLewisham.

Still in 2021 for our 20th anniversary look back and we’ve reached Ondine – our first full scale show in #Dorset. We took over the village of #Abbotsbury as audiences climbed the hill to St Catherine’s Chapel meeting an array of weird and wonderful characters on the way.

Blurb for House That Slipped In our look back for our 20th anniversary we’re up to pandemic times when we created the online show ‘The House That Slipped’ – a mixture of filmed group scenes and individual actors in breakout rooms.

For our 20th anniversary celebration we’ve reached 2019, which was a year of big change for Teatro Vivo. Founder and original Artistic Director Sophie Austin made the decision to step back from the company, with Kas Darley and Mark Stevenson taking on the Artistic Director role together.

For our 20th anniversary we’ve reached ‘Evelyn’s Roots’ in 2018. Written by Bernadette Russell & Gareth Brierley (White Rabbit) it took audiences on a journey through the streets of Evelyn Ward to tell the stories of people who have laid down their roots in Deptford over the last 400 years.

Our 20th anniversary look back has reached another event in 2017 – Access All Areas. Created with ThisIsWired – from an original idea from the brilliant Kate Bond - audiences turned up for a gig at a secret Dalston location only to find that they had to become the band for the night.

Continuing our 20th Anniversary look back we’re up to 2017 when we were commissioned to make a bespoke interactive play created for a 70th birthday party. 12 actors mingled incognito with wedding party guests before the action kicked off giving attendees a night they’ll never forget! #sitespecific

In our 20th anniversary celebrations, we’re up to 2017 when we teamed up with acclaimed stage designer Takis and renowned theatre company ice and fire to present a brand new theatrical experience: Arming The World. It exposed the British arms trade out on the streets of #London

For our 20th Anniversary we’re up to 2016 and our Shakespearean mash-up ‘Much Ado on the High Street’ which took place around the streets of Forest Hill. Shakespeare returned to write a sonnet in honour of this South London area, whilst finding scenes from his play’s performed around the streets.

For our 20th Anniversary we’re up to ‘A Midsummer Faery Den’ which first appeared in Grow Mayow in 2016, but has since popped up at ORNC, Camp Bestival, Forster Memorial park, for Deptford folk and loads of other places.

As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration we’re up to 2015 when the ‘Lewisham Project’ began. Initially funded by Lewisham Council this ranged from us creating sing-alongs and Wassail events around the borough, the usherettes out championing ward assemblies.

When #Downham was first developed 100 years ago a wall was built to keep those that had moved from #Deptford and #Bermondsey out of the 'posher' areas to the south. This 'class wall' was in place for 26 years.

Next for our 20th Anniversary look back is ‘The Hunters Grimm’ (and ‘Fairytale Finders’). We first created it in 2014 in #Redbridge, Newbury Watermill and with the Albany in #Deptford. It popped up a few times before final productions in #Catford and #Stratford in 2019.

Continuing our 20th Anniversary look back: we’re up to 2014 and to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War, we teamed up with Tramshed to create a site specific adaptation of Brecht’s famous play around the site of Woolwich Arsenal.

We couldn’t let our 20th Anniversary celebrations pass without a nod to us becoming a charity in 2013. This has meant having some amazing people on our board of trustees. Often people experiencing or seeing our work won’t know all the huge amounts of support and effort that go on behind the scenes.

We’ve reached the 2012 #olympics in our 20th Anniversary look back. As part of Lewisham Council’s celebrations on #Blackheath we created our Lewisham Alternative Sports Day with Slow Motion Sprinting, Dry Synchronised Swimming, Parent & Child Show Jumping and a Ward Assembly Superhero Relay Race!

We couldn’t look back over the last 20 years without mentioning all our street characters. The Usherettes, Wizardettes, Musettes and Soubrettes. They have popped up on the streets of Lewisham, Hillingdon, Thurrock and as part of the 2012 Olympics chatting to people on the streets.

In our look back over 20 years we’re up to 2008-9 when we created our Tango inspired show Hothouse. Integrating amazing musicians in with the dance and action we performed at The Horniman, the Albany, Age Exchange and The Arcola (as part of Grimeborn) – and included a tango lesson for the audience!

Looking back for our 20th anniversary at our first commission. In 2008 we took over HMV in Covent Garden (alas no longer there) to celebrate a whole host of DVDs (remember DVDs?) for Miramax. From Pulp Fiction to Scream, Clerks and Chicago we recreated scenes through the store.

Our next 20th anniversary look back is ‘Supermarket Shakespeare’. We performed it in the aisles of @sainsburys.bsky.social in Lee Green, New Cross, Lewisham and Forest Hill over three years. It appeared on TV news shows across the world.

Next up in our 20th Anniversary celebrations: In 2006-7 we adapted The Three Sisters as ‘Here But There’ – adapted by Gabriel Bisset-Smith we performed it around Manor House Library in Hither Green (before it’s refurb!) and then around the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden (before it disappeared!).

Our 20th Anniversary look back continues with ‘Lovers and Liars’ – Our version of Twelfth Night in Manor House Gardens in Hither Green. A huge cast took over the whole park and caused comedy chaos in the sun (local kids even tried to save a shipwrecked Viola)

Like many of our shows in our look back at 20 years of Teatro Vivo the next up took place at You Don’t Bring Me Flowers in Hither Green. In November 2005 three short plays written by Fiona Whitelaw, Emma Warren and Mark O’Neil were performed in the midst of this brilliant florist/café.

We’re starting off our look back at 20 years of Teatro Vivo shows with our first ever production in June/July 2005: Doing What Lovers Do – and adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with audiences guided around Manor House gardens in Hither Green by Rosaline and Paris. How young we all look!!

2025 is our 20th Anniversary!! In 2005 Sophie Austin put up posters and sent out emails asking for like minded creatives to create work around #hithergreen in South East London. From there she built Teatro Vivo nurturing some amazing talent along the way.
