I have one episode left in my rewatch of Happy Valley S2 and BRITBOX IS DOWN - this is not the thrilling Saturday night I had planned. 😠

Today in 'adventures in student evaluations' I find that someone last year thought I had "very poor media literacy" and while that may or may not be true (I honestly don't know?), I'm curious what it was about my class on 19thC fiction-or maybe detective fiction-that made it a conspicuous issue. 🤨

I guess I think it would be better to put cacophonous new music into its own program instead of insisting on putting some of it into every program. Then people who like that sort of thing can enjoy it and the rest of us can enjoy our Beethoven without a medicinal dose of modernity. 🙃

I decided to re-watch the first 2 seasons of Happy Valley before watching S3. I started S1 last night and damn, it is so good, so so much better than pretty much any of the stuff currently being churned out for streaming.

Why is the music always four times as loud as the dialogue - I have to watch every show with the remote in my hand so I can turn the volume up and down every couple of minutes. Grumble grumble. 😠

My first task this morning was giving Fred that preventive medicine that you have to somehow get onto the skin under the fur at the back of the neck. The good thing is that this unpleasant wrestling match is surely going to be the worst part of my day - right?! 😅🐈‍⬛

Finally finished Kate Cayley's novel Property, and that "finally" tells you it was a bit of a struggle. I'm not really sure why: it's very meticulously written and crafted yet I just couldn't get any traction with it - and the last part felt very manipulative.

So much of the collapsing state of higher ed seems due to administrative FOMO. Those 'critical thinking' skills they (sometimes) claim to be in favour of lose out to hype every time.

At my second 'hybrid' meeting of the week and it confirms my suspicion that teaching this way would be insupportable. Worst of both worlds 100%.

Through a combination of diligence, lots of good fortune, and having almost no social life I have not had so much as a cold since 2019 and I have a cold now and have to say I have not missed this. 🤧
