Book #8 of 2026 - What Feasts at Night, by T. Kingfisher. Second in the Sworn Soldier series, Easton here returns to a family hunting cabin in Gallacia to find it in disarray and the caretaker dead. The villagers believe a moroi, a breath-stealing monster, has taken up residence in the lodge.

Book #7 of 2026 - The Face of the Lion by John Blackburn. A remote area in the Scottish Highlands is teeming with thugs preventing entry. They are only a symptom of the problem - a madman is altering humans into shambling beasts. Similar in tone to a Quatermass adventure or an Amicus thriller.

#werewolfwednesday The November 1941 issue of of Weird Tales carried the story ‘The Werewolf Howls’ by Clifford Bell. Universal’s The Wolf Man was soon to be released, so this tale of a werewolf in olden France must’ve been gobbled up by those who’d seen the previews for Lon Chaney’s beast.

Yesterday’s Eyes Have It Monster: Professor Henry Jarrod in House of Wax, 1953

Book #6 of 2026 - Crota by Owl Goingback. A series of brutal murders in a small town turn out to be the work of an ancient supernatural creature. 80 pages in, and it reminds me a tad of Rawhead Rex with a flavor all its own, with Native American mythology involved.

Second try at book #5 for 2026 -did not finish the other. Blood is the Life by John L. French has Baltimore Detective Bianca Jones facing off against vampires. She’s had some bizarre cases, so when bodies are drained of blood she’s assigned the work. Occult detective fiction is a favorite of mine.

From a UK trip with my wife in 2024. As impressive in person as I’d hoped.

Book #2 of 2026 Crover Island by J. M. Kelly. Do things come in threes? Here they do: an earthquake releases hungry and deadly predators on a Scottish island during a hurricane. The islanders must fight for survival under the worst of conditions. I enjoy “nowhere to go” monster stories!

My 2026 resolution is to finish my tbr pile. Since I’m always buying new books, though… Further proof that collecting books and reading books are two separate hobbies.

Book #1 of 2026 A Scent of New-mown hay by John Blackburn. Odd movements by the Soviet Union have an unusual cause, and what appears to be Cold War intrigue is actually a threat to all of humanity. Thanks to @valancourtbooks.bsky.social for reprinting this terrific book!

#werewolfwednesday The Beast of Gévaudan was a creature responsible for 60+ deaths in south-central France between 1764 - 1767. Most likely an Italian wolf (Canis lupus italicus) or pack, hysteria at the time attributed it to one creature “like a wolf, yet not a wolf” with supernatural powers.

Unable to decide whether peripatus (velvet worms), tardigrades (water bears), or eyelash mites are the coolest mean-looking (yet harmless) invertebrates. I do know I’d love to make a movie where giant-sized versions of all three wreak havoc on civilization before squaring off in a battle royale!

What do these two films have in common? Absolutely nothing so far as I can tell, other than I’m listening to the soundtrack of Destroy All Monsters while writing an essay on 1408 for an upcoming issue of Stephen King movie adaptations for We Belong Dead magazine. Is this an unholy pairing? Am I mad?
