I wonder how many people know that Walmart has a section of its employee training dedicated to showing new hires how to apply for SNAP. Those same workers then spend their SNAP benefits at Walmart, feeding the same machine that underpays them. That’s not a business model, it’s exploitation. 😒

What if…stick with me…what if the money that was set aside for SNAP benefits is actually gone? The SNAP program is deeply entwined with financial stability throughout the entire food system! Walmart would see the largest immediate sales decline as they capture around 24%–26% of all SNAP spending.

The myth of the “welfare queen,” born under Reagan, rewired the national imagination so that poverty looks Black even when, in raw numbers, it’s mostly white. That myth has racialized empathy. White pain mobilizes policy response; Black pain is normalized, dismissed, or criminalized.

Mamdani’s victory can’t be reduced to kitchen-table issues — saying voters only care about affordability & the economy. Yes, economic pain is real, but his success came from talking frankly about people’s lived financial struggles & naming the social wounds of Islamophobia, racism, and antisemitism.

Folks asking, ‘Where were Black people? Why weren’t we in the streets?’ Because y’all don’t know us. We’ve always organized in the shadows — in pews, salons, kitchens & living rooms. We don’t just protest — we plan. We don’t just shout — we show up. 91%, 92%. That’s not silence. That’s strategy!

Conditional food access based on political compliance. This is weaponized hunger. And it’s exactly why food justice advocates have been warning that food security is not enough—we need food sovereignty.

Research shows that racial attitudes have a profound impact on their support for public policies. For example, a Health Affairs study suggested "White people's racial resentment against Black people was correlated with consistent, substantial support for more burdensome policies.

You might keep an eye out for the film “American Troubles” that’s starting to hit festivals. It presents Ireland’s history of ethnic violence as a blueprint for the path to proportional representation in the US — and outlines the failures of our Voting Rights Act to achieve the same goals.

It’s the first time in modern history that SNAP benefits will be halted, and we don’t know when they will return, so connect with mutual-aid groups. There may be ongoing mutual-aid efforts in your community that focus on food assistance, such as community fridges, community gardens & soup kitchens.

This is how you govern through induced suffering: Cut the benefits, eliminate the measurement systems, make the crisis invisible & let nonprofits scramble to fill gaps they aren’t designed to fill. They’re not just starving people. They’re erasing the evidence that they’re starving people.

SNAP is one of the largest anti-hunger programs in the country. But here’s the thing: most of those SNAP benefits are redeemed at big-box retailers like Walmart, Kroger & Amazon. So even as government dollars circulate to fight hunger, they end up reinforcing corporate power—feeding profits.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Amy Sherald paints us as we know ourselves—not through the gaze of whiteness, but through the lens of truth and tenderness. She’s known for reimagining Black portraiture and beauty,—declaring that we are here, we are whole, and we are worthy of being seen.

In all three cases—Mill Creek Valley, Paradise Valley, and Kenyon-Barr—urban renewal served as a tool for racialized displacement and erasure, with federal support to clear central Black neighborhoods for highways. These projects decimated generational wealth & destroyed community institutions.

And we read Project 2025! Not just as research, but as strategy. We did what we’ve always done: We listened to each other. We named the threat before mainstream media did & we built informal networks of resistance that looked like prayer calls, barbershop debates, teacher lounges & Sunday sermons!

Don’t tell me Black communities aren’t organized just because you don’t recognize the structure. Our infrastructure is the kitchen table. The sanctuary. The stoop. The club meeting. The group chat. The Friday bowling league. We are not unorganized. We are simply not colonized by your categories. 😒

Walmart already sits at the intersection of low wages, rural dependence, and community hollowing — and now they’re moving into data colonization, turning conversation itself into commerce. Walmart wants to talk to you through artificial intelligence — not to listen, but to learn how to sell. 😒

Whiteness centers its comfort and then demands labor from those it has marginalized. Emotional labor. Educational labor. Organizing labor. All while shielding itself from discomfort or risk. It’s the learned habit of assuming someone else, often Black folks, will do the work & absorb the harm.

So many of you get your authority by being white. That's it. You don't know any more than I do. You're not smarter than I am. You're just white and that grants you a level of authority that I am not granted without proving myself. You're trading in white supremacy. You should think about that.

Project 2025 was OBVIOUS to us because it’s part of a long lineage: COINTELPRO, Reaganomics, the 1994 Crime Bill, voter suppression — we’ve seen this before! 😒

Taraji used a platform where Black voices aren’t filtered & said it plain: Project 2025 is real! That wasn’t a celebrity moment. That was an act of cultural organizing. And it was dismissed by y’all. That’s the cycle: We ring the bell. Folks ignore the fire. Then act surprised when the house burns.
