30 years ago the Manchester “In The City” music showcase had a battle of the new bands. Two of the finalists would go on to have big careers; Placebo and Kula Shaker. Most of the other acts sank without trace, although Charlie’s Angels did get on Channel 4’s The White Room.

30 years ago today various bands, including a few Britpop ones, went into recording studios to lay down a track each for a groundbreaking charity album to be released less than a week later. It was the one and only time a band called The Smokin' Mojo Filters would play together.

30 years ago today Inspiral Carpets rereleased their early single “Joe” as part of the publicity for their upcoming singles collection album. One of the two CD’s includes their brilliant cover of Tainted Love. Johnny Cigarettes liked it.
