Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike (1968) – Though not on Labor Day itself, the strike’s demand for recognition of Black workers’ dignity and King’s assassination there permanently linked Black labor struggles to the broader meaning of the holiday. #LaborDay2025

Exclusion from the American Federation of Labor (AFL) – While the AFL was a key advocate of Labor Day, its racist policies barred Black workers from many unions. This made early Labor Day celebrations a reminder of exclusion for many Black communities. #LaborDay2025

Pullman Strike (1894) – The government created Labor Day as a holiday right after the Pullman Strike was crushed w/ violent force. Blk workers, mostly excluded from the strike, were often used as strikebreakers—illustrating how they were entangled n the events that birthed the holiday. #LaborDay2025

1892 New Orleans General Strike – Black and white dockworkers struck together for equal pay and better hours. This interracial labor solidarity was rare and highlighted the possibility of a Labor Day that truly included Black workers. #LaborDay2025

Exclusion from Early Labor Day Celebrations (1880s–1890s) – When Labor Day parades began in Northern cities, many Black workers were either excluded or segregated to the back of the line, showing how racism shaped the holiday’s early observance. #LaborDay2025
