1 March 72 St David's Day and they're all going to school in Wales bearing daffodils and leeks and there will be singing in the Assembly Hall and competitions and a great many will get drunk tonight except me of course.

22 Nov 75 Went to Pontrhydyfen. Lunched Bara Lawr. Half of Pontrhydyfen must have visited the house. Saw house where I was born. They've tarted it up. E still very ill....Must write a book. Means another visit to Wales. Autobiog should make some money. Good Yarn!

21 Nov 75 Sober. Good weather. Over Black Mountains. Wild Wales. Stopped for sust in Red Lion fifteenth century pub. Black Mountains beautiful. Sheep cows wild ponies...Pontrhydyfen tomorrow.

20 Nov 75 Sober and well. Weather good! No rain! Talbot very dramatic at night with huge furnaces going. Overall feeling of grime however despite clarity of air...Wild horses. Faggots and peas lunch. Fish and chips dinner.

19 Nov 75 Drove to Neath Castle Hotel. Terrible. Moved to 'Executive' Hotel, Aberavon. Pretty bad too but had a bath to go with it. Tonight a suite...Weather wild and Welsh. Had beer and felt very ill.

18 Nov 75 Oxford all day. Lunched at Bear, Woodstock....Terrible weather. Very wet cold. Froze all day. Visited Taylor-Burton. Bought £17,500 piece of land for Buckminster Fuller Building. Everything very shabby. Clothes cars etc. Students unattractive. Beer warm. Depressing.

11 Nov 75 Heaps of presents. Can't be bothered opening them. Lots of lovely books including five copies of one. E as nervous as I am.

9 Nov 75 Feel better but curiously muted. Leave tonight for London. Started but for once will not finish a massive book by John O'Hara. How that man wrote and wrote and wrote and he might easily have stopped with Samarra and no one would have noticed.

8 Nov 75 Big pull out from booze. Talked to Liza on phone. Very sweet. Doctors all over me taking blood tests, intravenous feeding etc. I look terrible and feel diabolical...Really must now never drink again except possibly a glass of wine with dinner.

2 Nov 1975 E practically sloshed all day on and off mostly because we got into bitter arguements about wording of invitation cards re my birthday party. At one point after I had been pecuilarly destructive she went off in tears to 'Shen Buddhist's' room.

26 Oct 75 Chobe. Stayed at home. All went out on boat. Sans me. Just as well. All got sloshed except me naturally....Looking forward to Europe. First time since we arrived. Miss books - I mean mine - and children.

12 Oct 75 Went on picnic. Cucumber sandwiches on the marriage grounds. Cold wine, beer, champagne and cold chicken for the other. Coca-Cola and water for me. E still worrying me. So much so that I wonder if she thinks me a bit weird at times. She started talking oddly too now and again.

10 Oct 75 Got shamefully sloshed and despite all my idiocies - nasty too - we are as happy as children. We catch our breaths every so often and say with a kind of smiling wonder and delight. 'Hey!' Do you realize we are actually married?

9 Oct 75 Stayed in bed all day yesterday. Read and slept. E fed me in bed lunch, though had dinner in living room. Looks like marriage is on. I wonder why I am still doubtful. It doesn't seem right but I don't know why. Perhaps I'm afraid of legal responsibility.

30 Sep 75 About 5-15 baboons surrounded our suite. We thought it normal but discovered that it was a phenomenon never seen before. It would of course occur when E was here. Hereforth to be known as Elizabeth's baboons. Strange Richard Barrett (3 Degrees man) pestered us all evening. Quite scary.

29 Sep 75 Johannesburg - Chobe Jet (Lear) to Chobe. 1 hour 45 minutes. Landed on grass strip. Very bumpy. Saw elephants, baboons, buffaloes? Other people had terrible journey. Married Elizabeth Zulu fashion.

27 Sep 75 Tennis. Ugh!... Ringo out of his skull. Very unhappy man.

26 Sep 75 Johannesburg. Went to 'club' downstairs with creepy Peter Lawford. Terrible food danced with unknown girl. Press took pics. Also said I was drunk. Cheek. Went to tennis. Pres and wife. Usual agonizing boredom stiff with protocol.

1 August 1975 National Holiday. Went shopping Geneva. Bought new typewriter.

Sunday 13 July 1975 ETB returned Leningrad. She sounds a harassed mess. Wonder if I can put up with all that again. Also she is beginning to sound like her mother at times. Frightening prospect.

1 July 1975 Tuesday. Biked and read am perfectly content when not boozing.
