HMHS Britannic sank on this day in 1916. She had left Southampton on 12 November but hit a mine in the Aegean Sea nine days later. Thirty people died. Among the survivors were Violet Jessop, Arthur Priest, and Archie Jewell, who had all survived the sinking of Britannic’s sister, Titanic, in 1912.

The statement is made in the presence of Signor Guido di Vincenzo, the secretary of the legal office of the royal embassy, and is then sent to Senator Smith. #Titanic

At some point during April 30th, 5th Officer Lowe visits the Italian embassy in Washington DC. He signs a declaration stating that, he wishes the word 'Italians' in his testimony to be replaced by 'immigrants belonging to latin races.' #Titanic

The letter also includes other examples of Bride's faulty memory, and he admits that his timings may be awry. If the letter is accurate, Phillips did not mention the Mesaba's message to his colleague - or perhaps Bride did not remember?

Bride's letter also includes details on the Frankfurt. In this version, Phillip's retort was right at the end, after the Captain had told the two operators to look out for themselves. The Frankfurt was indeed working with the Titanic at this time but there is no corroboration of "you fool."

Smith reads out the letter into the record but the mention of the attack and possible death of the stoker does not seem to elicit a reaction. Smith, it is claimed, never read the papers and so it is likely that he overlooked details on the sinking that are now lost to history.

In the last few minutes of the #Titanic's life, he and Phillips had retaliated against a firemen who was attempting to steal Phillips lifebelt. When the two wireless men left their office, the stoker was left unconscious on the floor and presumably drowned when the ship sank.

In that last appearance, Bride loaned Senator Smith his copy of a letter on the #Titanic disaster which he had submitted to the Marconi company and dated April 27th. It includes one detail which Bride had mentioned to the New York Times but which he never mentioned in his previous interrogations.

The last member of the #Titanic's roster to head home was Harold Bride. He last appeared before the US Inquiry on May 4th and left New York on the SS Baltic five days later, arriving in Liverpool on the 18th.

Eliza Gladys, better known as Millvina, would live to the age of 97, passing away on the 98th anniverary of the Titanic's launch. She was the last survivor, and her ashes were scattered at the ship's old berth in Southampton.

While working in a Southampton Shipyard in later life, Bert met a fellow survivor who had been in the same lifeboat; 'You must have been the little boy,' he told him. Bert Dean would pass away aged 81, on April 14th, 1992, the 80th anniversary of the collision.

Everyone wanted to hold 12 week old Eliza, the youngest survivor, and an officer had to 'ration' cuddles from 1st and 2nd class passengers for no more than 10 minutes at a time. An on-board collection raised £50 for the family.

Also on board the Adriatic was Eva Dean and her young children Bert and Eliza. They were returning to England after the head, Bert Sr. perished in the sinking.

The days events concluded, Ismay and the crew were free to return to England. They would leave New York on the White Star Liner Adriatic on May 2nd and arrive in Liverpool on the 11th. In contrast to his treatment in America, Ismay would be greeted with applause on his arrival. #Titanic

He wanted to clarify that he saw them in the smoking room about 1 o'clock. That is the last he saw of them. In his testimony he said that the fourth person was Arthur Ryerson but in his book Gracie said he was a stranger.

To close the session, Gracie briefly returned to elaborate on a comment he had made regarding his sightings of fellow 1st class passengers Archibald Butt, Clarence Moore and Francis Millet on the #Titanic.

Mr Bishop said that no one rushed his boat but there was a little confusion. He did not hear 'women and children first,' 'men stand back' or orders given to clear and lower the lifeboats. Mr Bishop also said that there were some people in the count of boat occupants who were missed. #Titanic

As it transpired, the operation of these doors would have little effect on the rate of flooding. #Titanic

No order had been given to do this; he did this on his own volition. He mentions no problem closing the doors during his interrogation. An expedition to the wreck in 2005 would seem to indicate that both watertight doors on F deck were closed.

One of these crew was assistant 2nd steward Joseph Wheat who was called to give evidence at the British Inquiry. There were two watertight doors on F deck in the area of the Turkish bath; he closed the inside door but to shut the outside one, he went up to E deck.
