Just outside Nice is Cagnes-Sur-Mer, where Renoir spent the last twenty years of his life. Mostly wheelchair bound, he painted in simpler strokes and even sculpted when he could no longer hold a brush.

For a different take on Carnaval in Nice, head to Menton (about 30 min by train) for Fete du Citron and its lemon themes. Local restaurants do special menus, farmers and artisans sell delicious fruits and preserves, and there are giant citrus sculptures.

Today’s awesome adventure in Nice: the Roman ruins at Cemenelum. This Roman city of 10,000 in what is now the Cimiez neighborhood of Nice was once the provincial capital. Not much is excavated except baths and an arena (since modern buildings are here), but super cool!

Nice’s Palais Lascaris is a baroque palace built by the descendants of a former Grand Master of the Knights of St John (Malta). While only a few rooms survive in excellent condition, it’s a fun small museum in the old town to explore. There is more history in Nice than I had expected!
