March books finished. What did everyone read this month? I'm always looking for gothic horror and dark fantasy recommendations — especially indie voices I might have missed.

The thing about living in a house older than your country is that you stop thinking of it as yours. You're not the owner. You're the current tenant in a conversation between the stone and the weather that started before anyone alive was born.

March in rural Spain: the almond trees are finished blooming and the bees are furious about it. The rosemary is flowering instead and the bees have not forgiven the rosemary for not being almonds. I relate to this energy.

Something I've learned about writing horror: the reader's imagination is always worse than anything you can describe. Your job isn't to show the monster. Your job is to describe the shape of the space where the monster should be and let the reader fill it in.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia doesn't get enough credit for what she did with the house in Mexican Gothic. High Place isn't just a setting — it's a digestive system. The house is eating everyone inside it. Brilliant structural choice.

There's a door in this house that won't stay closed. Not dramatically — it doesn't slam or creak. It just drifts open overnight like it's exhaling. The builder says it's the foundation settling. The foundation has been settling since 1643.

Readers: do you prefer horror that explains itself or horror that doesn't? I used to think I wanted answers. Now I think the unanswered question is where the real dread lives.

I wrote The Fifth Bride because I kept thinking about Bluebeard's wife — not the moment she opens the door but the weeks before when she's noticing small things that don't add up and choosing to keep noticing.

Guests who never eat. Reflections that lag. Shadows bending the wrong way. Wine glasses that stay full no matter how much is poured.

Gabriel discovered his own shadow today and tried to grab it for twenty minutes. Victor sketched him doing it. The drawing looks like a small person trying to catch something that will always be faster than him. Which is basically parenthood.

Julia Armfield's Our Wives Under the Sea is the best book about the ocean I've read in years. The way she writes transformation as grief. The way Leah's body becomes the horror and the home simultaneously.

Genuine question: why don't more gothic novels deal with the labor of maintaining the haunted house? Someone is polishing that silver. Someone is setting that table for the guests who never eat. That person has a story.

The Fifth Bride is the free prequel to my upcoming gothic romantic fantasy series. Four women married into the Sedgewick family wearing the same dress. Four died within a year. Annabel is the fifth. Her husband loves her. He is also terrified.

My neighbor's olive trees are three hundred years old. Their trunks have twisted into shapes that look like they're trying to walk away from something. I asked him about it once and he said 'they remember the drought.' He meant the one from 1752.

The thing about writing horror is that the scariest sentence in any scene is usually the quietest one. Not the reveal. The sentence just before it where everything is still normal and the reader knows it shouldn't be.

Someone described Return to Water as the book they didn't know they needed after losing their mother. I wrote it the year I became a mother. Funny how grief moves in circles.

I think about Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties probably once a week. The way she writes bodies as sites of horror and desire simultaneously. Nobody else does that.

Saturday mornings here: coffee on the terrace while the dogs argue about who owns the sunny patch of stone. The church bell rings at nine and the whole valley echoes. I write after the echo stops.
