It can be really slow as you start drawing for the day. Whether you're feeling more tired or it's simply just your first time sitting down to draw in a day or so, it can take a while. And here's your reminder that that's okay!

Here's one unexpected thing you might NOT be doing that'll immensely speed up your Art learning process, Journalling. Okay, before you roll your eyes and keep scrolling, here's why journalling will push your Art to the next level:

Don't overwhelm yourself when you're trying to learn Art! Rather than tackling gesture, anatomy, value and colour all at the same time Pick two topics and find a simple bridge between them!

Whether you use reference during painting or you don't, An extremely useful middle-ground is to solve the problem when it happens. Like rather than finding a bunch of images of necks in advance... You could search for them after trying to solve it yourself!

Study

You don't need perfect lines to create a good portrait. What's more important is that your lines tell you where you're putting your paint. Mine are always extremely messy, which is okay because as I paint, I forget about line and focus on form!

Forget the golden ratio and rule of thirds. Composition doesn't have to be complicated. Let me show you a simpler approach using just 3 intuitive questions to create captivating art and improve your composition.

What are the biggest problems you face while learning Art?

You don't have to start practicing composition purely from imagination. Use other artists work, figure out the shapes they used and try and layer it onto a small thumbnail sketch. You don't have to make a masterpiece. Squint to block out some of the detail, even draw over it to see the shapes!

Expression study! Traditional portrait artists often have smaller pre-painted versions of their big pieces near them as a reference. I think doing a quick 'composition sketch' as a digital artist, is something extremely useful to add to your references!

I'm finding 3 things useful when learning: - Step out your comfort zone. - Expand on what you've already been learning. - Space out your studies. Doing 7 hours in a day isn't as valuable as practicing for bursts of time, over time. (It helps your memory much more!, This is 'Spaced Repetition')

Small WIP!

This is everything you need to become a self-taught Artist in 2025: - Timed, focused practice. 30-60 Min! - Practicing from memory. This isn't about drawing a head from imagination, this is about using techniques that you've been learning, and trying to focus on how they work!

Practicing making my sketches look more finished and presentable! Usually my process is a rough messy sketch straight into painting, but this was actually kind of relaxing. Have any of you tried changing up your drawing process and realised similar things?

Making Art easier will help you improve. But, Doing art only to improve will push you into burn out. Then well, Art is hard all over again. So, how do you make Art easier, with the goal to bring yourself joy?

Do you struggle to draw the head? Turning it at any angle might seem extremely difficult. But really, it's super simple, it's just been explained badly. I've made a guide just for you, it'll help you draw the head at any angle with ease.

Growth in Art can seem very slow. But, improvement isn't linear! You'll experience awesome spikes in your journey. But also dips where it feels like you're getting worse. And you know what? Those dips, are usually right before a breakthrough.

Drawing the head is pretty tough. Especially trying to read through Andrew Loomis' books on it. But there's good news. Instead of over-complicating it, you can use just 2 shapes. A circle, and an oval.
