I like my black metal raw but this album goes a bit too far: The music is pretty great but it seems to have been recorded with a cheap mic across a wall, especially the drums. 😂 Why would you do this to a perfectly fine symphonic BM album? What do you think?

Below-average melodic black metal but that green-tinted cover is a curious color pick for the genre. Bloodthorn 🇳🇴 - In the Shadow of Your Black Wings (1997)

And on the topic of Moonspell, what a good use of his voice Fernando Ribeiro makes in Wolfheart (1995). Amazing how he manages to give so much personality to an otherwise pretty good gothic metal album.

Like the austrian Sachertorte, Summoning 🇦🇹 perfected the art of layering rhythms and melodies to create atmospheres not made of sweet chocolate but of bitter yearning and doom in their middle-earth inspired music. Stronghold (1999) is a masterpiece.

Never forget how cool Moonspell's first demo Anno Satanæ (1993) sounds. It's blissful to listen to such ingenuous, intense and energetic music. 🇵🇹

Today's archeological finding is dedicated to Thule, the Icelandic black metal pioneers that released a handful of interesting demos in the mid 90's before changing names and continuing their blasphemies as the (less exciting) Curse.

There’s a whole universe of Russian/Ukrainian bands we miss out on in the West due to language/cultural barriers. Pagan Reign 🇷🇺 is one of them: extremely well done folk-black metal with top-tier musicianship. Go watch this now if you don't believe me!

“Power And Will” is the art of doing more with less. Impressive debut from Mgła, a band that started as worthy imitators of Darkthrone and went on to develop their own sound not long after.

I'm not the biggest Marduk fan but this album is very enjoyable for what it is. It's greatest virtue might be its extreme focus: 32 minutes of solid material instead of 50+ minutes of filler. More bands should take note! Marduk 🇸🇪 - Viktoria (2018)

First listen: What a strange sounding album. Second listen: What a masterpiece. It reminds me of 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss' turned upside down: complex, airy and beautiful but also bold and inspired. Leander 🇺🇸 - On the Hall Hill... (2023)

Armagedda 🇸🇪 is one of my favorite Swedish black metal bands. The bass-heavy and the quasi-clean declamatory vocals (love ’em or hate ’em!) makes their final opus "Ond Spiritism" (2004) a truly special work of art. An album that sounds evil purely by virtue of atmosphere.

Empaligon 🇩🇪 - Black Dominated Annihilation (1999) is unrelenting black metal. Dark and nasty, but also fast and precise like a machine gun. And blast beats to die for! A hidden gem. 💎

Who remembers Kreator’s hyperactive debut Endless Pain (1985)? Even if Mille's vocal performance is absolutely maniacal, I always thought it was cool how he and Ventor alternates vocal duties throughout the album. A true ‘80s metal milestone and a huge inspiration for countless bands.

What are your favorite black metal acts from the balkan region? Apparently Bosnia has a very strong underground scene but I'm not too familiar with most of these bands, any recommendations are welcome!

In Summoning’s Dol Guldur (1997), keyboards carry most of the melodic weight, while guitars stay in the background, with rare exceptions like the MAJESTIC riffs in "Nightshade Forest." I’ll never get tired of this song. I love the ingenuity and innocence of their early era.
