Fox Shore Apartments was sold at the end of October 2025. Since then tenants suffered a period with beyond unacceptable conditions. The tenant Association is more unified than ever. Below is a photo of a recent hybrid meeting organized, and facilitated by new tenant leaders!!

We never get tired of celebrating victories, because what may seem small can mean everything to the people living it. In November, one of our tenants at Damen Court, working alongside our organizers, won long-overdue renovations to her bathroom and kitchen.

These words came directly from our team- shaped by our goals for 2026 and the progress we’ve already made. This word cloud isn’t just a reflection, it’s a guide. We’ll be using it all year to stay focused, aligned, and accountable to ourselves and the communities we serve!

Last week the Crestwood Tenants Association took time to celebrate the holidays and the New Year as a community. When we take the time to get to know our neighbors we find unexpected points of connection and unity that remind us that their fight is also our fight.

This victory wasn’t just about stopping an eviction. It was about restoring stability, rebuilding trust, and helping Ms. Butler transform from someone facing hardships alone into an active member of a union ready to win long-term change.

Victory! On Dec 3, 2025, the Ellis Lakeview Tenant Association signed their first legally binding contract with Standard Communities, guaranteeing onsite security and giving tenants the power to enforce the agreement themselves.

This victory wasn’t just about correcting a ledger. It was about building Ms. Coleman’s confidence, protecting her housing, and surrounding her with a community. We work in tandem so that residents not only solve crises, but move forward with strength, knowledge, and power.

In 2019, the slumlord Apex Chicago IL LLC bought Ellis Lakeview. Tenants organized and kicked them out. Since then, we’ve won hot water, new boilers, and 24/7 security- but we’re not done yet. Because what’s a rehabbed building worth if tenants don’t feel safe coming home?

The Fox Shore Tenant Association had a potluck to celebrate their victories, and quickly got back to work. Currently, the building owners have a parking policy that has caused dozens of tenants' cars to be towed often. Follow their fight against this abuse of power here!

Huge victory for the Crestwood Apartments Tenants Union! Temporary relocation for tenants who were without heat, hot water and accessible units. The association built a legal strategy and as of today all issues are resolved.

The Fox Shore Tenant Association had a potluck to celebrate the victories the tenant association has achieved in coordination with the City. The tenants were joined by the Mayor of Aurora, The Deputy Mayor and The Alderman to celebrate everyone's combined tireless efforts.

Tenants at the Fox Shore Tenant Association have been organizing for months to secure a fair contract with the prospective new owners of their building. Their top demand was back rent forgiveness—and they gained the support of every elected official who represents them.

Tenants testified about their abhorrent living conditions, previous broken promises, and their skepticism that any deal made without a contract will be honored. JASC knows from experience that govt agencies often lack the will or capacity to ensure developers follow through when receiving City funds

Indian trails Tenant Union members attended the City of Chicago Finance Committee hearing to demand a legally binding contract with the proposed buyer. The City is offering them $34 million in Tax exempt bonds, and tenants need a guarantee they will be used appropriately - to fix building issues.

On 9/23/25 representatives of the tenant association showed up to HUD's inspection to tell them why security at Ellis Lakeview is so important and that residents can't afford to go back to an unsafe building where their were shootings nearly every week.

Can you believe this difference for a tenant at our North Austin building? While Mr. Dobbs fought for many updates, management removed his tub, providing no timeline for its replacement. How did this victory happen? We escalated through every means: the City, local electeds and the Courts.

Keeping photo and video records of in-unit and building wide issues is essential in our path to victories. Without this documentation landlords and building management can diminish the seriousness and urgency of issues or dismiss them completely, for we have no means of holding owners accountable.

New blinds at Ellis Lakeview! This victory is a long time coming. Tenants in luxury buildings don't expect to live with broken, torn up, paper blinds for years on end. Whether it's a health or aesthetic issue, all tenants deserve dignity and to live comfortably in homes they are proud of.

IL HOUSING LAW UPDSTES: The Illinois State Legislature has made some important changes to housing law in 2025. These include the Landlord Retaliation Act, as well as some limits on tenant fees and a safe housing resource for domestic and sexual violence survivors.
