Magenta Horizon is a good-ass videogame. I'm nearing the halfway mark and feel like I'm still only starting to get a grasp on the system. Need to play with the projectile mechanics more.

I played through more of Magical Princess and got an ending and yeah. My thoughts hold. Game is pretty fucking boring and a lesser clone of Volcano Princess. Tempted to go back to VP so I can draw a fuller comparison.

It's funny to me how most non-linear games will only give a handful of key bosses to find and defeat, but Nine Sols goes nine. There's nine key bosses. Saddle up nerd.

When is someone going to make a raising sim where your daughter has to abuse stimulants to make it through her third consecutive 50 hour work week while also dealing with college, where she has an shitty, overbearing professor wrecking her mental health in a key course? Do I have to do it myself?

Magical Princess is kinda meh to me because it seems to lack the AP fuckery that makes games of it's ilk compelling; Volcano Princess and especially Consume Me did a lot better at that. It's also highly derivative of VP to the point of feeling like a copy in many aspects.

This is way better than my list. Some of those games did come from Dominic's recommendations too; I'm following his curator profile. So many cool ass videogames lying around that very few people actually know about.

Didn't play much of this one; gameplay didn't click for me. It's missing a certain je ne sais quoi that underlies gameplay I enjoy. Should still try more anyway.

* Obscure Games Thread For anyone stumbling across this, I'll use this to highlight obscure games I've greatly enjoyed and recommend. All inclusions are purely subjective, both as to relative obscurity and personal preference.

I only learned about Bad Bitch Blasters because Steam recommended it to me and I'm mad it slipped under my radar for a while. Need to find better discoverability for obscure games. But that's hard to balance with taste.

The amount of good and fun games out there is truly staggering. Completely put off of doomerism. Golden age for anyone seeking out unique experiences on the fringes of this bloated industry.

Mimic Logic gives Tactical Nexus.

The Big Catch: Tackle Box is so good. Feels like a Gamecube or Wii game ripped from an alternate timeline. Am curious to see how the negative feedback is responded to in the full game, as the core of it is very strong.

Minor Key Games' games are peak jank imo. Played a good bit of Eldritch and am now playing Slayer Shock, which is bad and very schlocky and I'm enjoying it anyway.

Looking through footage of this next to the first Colin McRae Rally game and it's really funny how much of a step up it is. The first one has a cheap, haphazard composite look that's completely different. Screams new hire between the two games.

It feels like Xbox has been taken out behind the woodshed, but you look back there and it's one guy beating himself in the head with a bat. There isn't enough money in the world to cure stupid.

Part of what I hated about the Highguard discourse is that it's scummy monetization practices faded into the background. They're so normalized at this point that I saw people hedging in relation to them. "It's not as bad..." essentially. The live service genre is thoroughly enshittified.

Looking through the recent posts about 1000xResist. It feels so weird bouncing off completely from something that other people regard highly. Weirdo taste.

Was thinking about this relative to Yakuza Kiwami 2 first. The story is dumb as shit. Low spoiler description, but the twist where Kiryu was actually involved had me put the game down for a bit. And then someone happened to get kidnapped again and it dealt me genuine mental damage.

The structure of games can add barriers to analyzing their narratives. Threading cutscenes and dialogue through gameplay creates a layer of obfuscation that makes things more difficult to both navigate and focus on. Retraversal is made more difficult too, as it's not as simple as flipping to a page.

It is interesting to compare battle royale games to the 2000 film of the same name, Battle Royale. I think the key difference is the presence of the orchestrators on the island as a tangible force in the film. They can be toppled, encouraging mutalistic engagement to try and beat the game itself.

If any game journalists would want sources on this story, I'd be more than happy to share. There's a number of interviews and information straight from Richard Hofmeier to corroborate this. Don't know how to reach out, but this is a story that I feel needs to published by someone who can tell it.

I still want to play Quantum Soteriology. The game was throughly wiped from the internet though. One of those things where the creator's intent was to wipe it out entirely, but my curiousity gets the better of me and I want to try it anyway.

Been touching base with the Yakuza franchise post Kiwami 3 debacle and RGG's misogynistic actions don't read as a surprise within the context of what I've seen so far, as someone not too deep into the series. The games are heavily, heavily patriarchal.

Rolled credits on Ridge Racer (2004, PSP) and started on the postgame content, of which there is plenty. Credits roll after the first eighteen tours, which solely consist of traditional race-to-the-front Ridge Racer gameplay and don't even cover half of the game's tours.
