Quilting, mostly
I forgot to share this one earlier: Butler Valley, AZ (Fondamonte), completed Sept 2025. The first of the "land use policy" series. Maybe I should think of a less dry-sounding title for the series? It makes it sound so boring.

"Exurbia" (from the ongoing Land Use Policy series): a quilted meditation on housing growth through subdividing land. The straight line cuts break the fabric. But the fabrics continue to change and increase in complexity with those cuts.

I just finished binding this second iteration of the Declaration of Independence. I think I'm going to push the next version towards increased verisimilitude and legibility on the next version.

I like to work in variations on a theme. I made the blue and white double wedding ring on the left in 2024. It reminded me of plates, so I tried inserting gold like kintsugi on the second one (on the right). I guess the series is still in progress...

I'm disappointed. It isn't what I hoped for. I've been dragging my feet on quilting and then binding it. It's fine. It's just not exciting or interesting. I wanted it to evoke china plates and kintsugi. Maybe I need to simplify it further? Fewer fabrics next time?

I love this public art piece. It's ephemeral, interactive, meaningful, and moving.

Made a "quick" and cheerful nine patch quilt for my friend in her favorite colors for her 40th birthday. It's a traditional quilt done in a modern colorway.

A simple nine patch Irish chain quilt using scraps. I took this as an opportunity to practice some long arm quilting designs and techniques before I quilt my kintsugi/DWR.

A small 12"x12" abstract fabric collage inspired by aerial landscapes of summer fields. This is one in a series of small studies for a bigger piece I'm working on. I'm exploring the interplay of quilting and piecing to get the feeling I want.

I wanted some long arm quilting templates, but those are so dang expensive. So I borrowed my friend's lab and a scrap piece of acrylic to make some. They're not perfect. But these are test prototypes and a learning experience.

A modern take on a classic quilt pattern inspired by kintsugi. It's a crazy quilt / double wedding ring mashup with metallic gold lines inserted into random seams.

Another landscape quilt is ready to quilt. This one has a title: "Butler Valley, Arizona." It is a portrait of an exploited landscape.

I've been experimenting with some piecing techniques and ideas on and off for the last 6 months. I thought this was going to be a series of small 12 inch "sketches," but it had other ideas. It's growing into a big piece.

Finished the over-dyed nine patch. It's a complete functional object, but seems to want to be something else. I will have to put it away and think about it for a while.

Oligarchy kills democracy. The top 1% owns or controls 16 times more wealth than half the collective population. They buy power to entrench their privilege. In such a case, equality is nothing more than an Orwellian fairy story. Happy Independence Day.

The boys reportedly love their new quilts and lit up when they saw them. I expected mild indifference, but their mom said they like blankets very much and love that their quilts were designed specially for them. I hope they use them for forts and naps and adventure until they fall apart.

The cityscape crumb quilt is finished and delivered. I used an Hilbert curve to quilt it. The minky fabric backing is scrap repurposed from a garment sewing project.

This quilt is a collab. My nephew embroidered some squares in kindergarten. I turned them into a quilt. We have the same initials, so I hand-quilted our initials and the year into one block. I'm sad to see this go. I really enjoyed making and looking at this.

I wonder whether other people work on one project until they finish it or whether they start and stop a dozen different projects like I do. This may be why it takes so long for me to finish anything, but why so many projects get finished at the same time. I finished three quilts last night.

Finally finished this one. The lighting isn't great, but I couldn't wait until morning to take pictures. The photo on the right shows off the colors better. (Details in comments)

Finished this abstract landscape-inspired quilt top yesterday. 100% linen from recycled/reused garments and scraps. I overdyed some pieces blue for a cohesive palette.

I made an ugly quilt top last year, using some free second-hand fabric. It disappointed me so much that I couldn't stand to look at it or finish it. Today, I overdyed it violet. I couldn't be happier with the result. I'm excited to work on it now.

This has been a difficult year. I need moments of beauty like this to sustain me. This week's highlights have been: peonies in bloom, the scent of lilacs, and homemade rhubarb pies. They are little things, but embracing joy is an act of resistance.

denim shirt. This is my most-used sewing pattern ever. I made this shirt a few months ago to replace a beloved (and tattered) version, but haven't broken it in yet. The cuffs and collar are faced with liberty tana lawn for fun.

The back of the landscape quilt is a cotton sheet I picked up from the Goodwill outlet. I think someone hand-dyed/printed leaves onto the quilt. I try to use existing, scrap, or recycled fabric when I can. It's always a treat to find something that looks like it has a history of its own.

I finally quilted, bound, and washed this landscape quilt. It's always amazing how these steps transform quilts. I quilted it in organic lines designed to look like a typographical map. The binding is a green/brown batik.

I wanted to work on a quick fun palette cleanser of a quilt between more intensive projects. But I just *had to* complicate it by cutting the fabric into little bits before sewing them back together. This is why I'm still messing around with 4" blocks 2 weeks later.

This is the second "doodle quilt" I finished last year (December 2024). It is pieced with scraps of blue and pink print fabric, bound with a striped bias binding, and quilted with looping free motion "doodles."

This is the third "notebook quilt" - a small series of ~50" x 60" quilts that look like doodles on a page. I call it "Notes on American History." The quilting lists some of King George's wrongs described in the Declaration of Independence that apply to the tyrant in the White House today.
