Since March, our two California wildlife centers have received 250+ birds affected by starvation. Seeing birds struggling to find food and washing up on beaches can feel overwhelming and leave us feeling helpless. But when birds reach care in time, recovery is possible.

So far this month, more than 20 Brown Pelicans have been admitted to our LA Center, with others seeing similar increases. In past seasons, hundreds have arrived underweight or injured and we’re ready to help. Pelicans can't tell us when they need help, so it's up to us to spot the signs.

During the Ventura oil incident in November 2025, responders faced an unusual challenge - an oiled grebe surrounded by sea lions. Because sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is illegal to disturb them, so the team had to think creatively to reach the bird safely.

Hummingbirds aren’t typical patients for us, but baby bird season arrived early. This pair of Allen’s Hummingbird hatchlings showed up in a box on our doorstep, and we moved quickly to care for them. Their beaks are so so small that drops from Q-tips kept them hydrated!
