Having evolved without predators, this cormorant lost its ability to fly ~2 million years ago! 😮 Because of this, they had difficulty escaping introduced predators, but thankfully conservation efforts have changed its status from Endangered to Vulnerable.

While its close relative, the White Stork, is gregarious, Black Storks are only seen solo or in pairs in marshes and rivers. Despite its extremely wide range across the globe, it has no particular area of the world in which it is abundant, and its status is unclear. 🤔

We’re seeing an unusual surge of sick & dying Western Gulls along the Southern California coast. Since July 25, 16 gulls have come into our care, many dehydrated, trouble standing, and in the most severe cases, respiratory issues. Early bird flu tests were negative, but more results are pending.

Endemic to New Zealand, the Brown Teal (Pāteke in Māori) has been driven near extinction due to introduced predators, but is now increasing thanks to captive breeding programs. While the main island no longer has wild populations, it can be found in sanctuaries and on smaller islands off the coast.
