they want you to be the venomous creature trapped, fighting with others. win or lose, you become more toxic as a result. and whether its the site owners and makers using your battles for engagement and profit, or peers in their minor fiefdoms manipulating you for their own satisfaction...

but anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that it's important to keep in mind the nature of tumblr, twitter, and yes even bluesky. these sites are Gu Pots. the worst, most horrific and brutal toxins rise to prominence because these sites are tailored to synthesize and promote them.

in many ways, this is a microcosm of a huge problem with the internet at large; where once clear divisions reigned, all-consuming social media companies have shrunken everyone into smaller and smaller spaces fighting over space. by now in 2026 it's a well observed phenomenon

also, whenever it comes up, I always think that it's not a coincidence most of the users of color (specifically the black users, and specifically starting around 2020 for obvious reasons) also left/were harassed/doxxed off the site years ago. this is why I avoid discoursing on there like the plague.

most of the horrible takes and discourses, the people who start them, the groups they run with? they cut their teeth on tumblr for years. we talk about 4chan a lot (and should!) when it comes to this sort of thing, but we do a disservice by not expanding focus to other sites with competing cultures

tumblr is not a boiling pot of crabs, it is a pot of Gu. the former, while aptly describing the combative and self-destructive nature of its most terminally online denizens as well as admin's efforts to destroy their own site, does not capture the sheer level of toxicity that *escapes* containment

as you can see from the screenshot, the idea there was that, by having that many venomous insects and beasts in an enclosed space battling to the death, the end result would be a complex hypertoxic poison used by the practitioner for their own ends so anyways, tumblr

for the unaware, a Gu Pot is a poison associated with ancient China, specifically Nanyue, used in black magic rituals. you might not have heard the name specifically, but the idea of "putting a bunch of venomous creatures in a pot to make super poison from the remains" may be more familiar to you

so I used to play an MMO called Tree of Savior (for those who know, you are familiar with the pain). in that game, classes take from world history and mythology. one of the classes available to advance into is Wugushi, a poison-based class which has a skill where you throw a Gu Pot at enemies
