Study multiple languages, make more progress, USE what you're learning π
The whole "consistency = daily" thing has so many of us in a chokehold. The point where we won't even start something if we can't guarantee that we'll be able to stick to it. But you can't guarantee that you'll stick to it and be consistent with it if you don't do it.

If you have a lot of language apps & resources, I'm practically begging, please audit & detox your list! Figure out what you have, how it helps, & what you need (if anything).

If you're struggling to understand a vocabulary word or grammar point and when it's used versus not used, practice! Theory can only get you so far.

How are you feeling about your 2025 study year? Seriously. No lies, no coddling. But also acknowledging the progress you made even when you don't feel like it's "real progress".

Interleaving is when you combine or mix together multiple tasks or learning objectives into one sessionβ like reading two chapters of one book, then two chapters of a second book, then returning to the first book. Participants were able to better retain new words and manage interference.

Trying to improve your speaking in other languages in the new year? Ask yourself these questions: 1) What ABOUT speaking do I find challenge? 2) What kinds of conversations do I see myself having? 3) Why do I want to speak these languages in the first place?

I'm not just telling you to Pre-Plan your language studies. I'm LITERALLY showing you how to do it. Here are your options to making a personalized study plan you'll actually follow (aka what to do BEFORE you make that plan):

One of the things I asked my Lab community to do before the start of the new year was choose a theme for 2026. This theme is their "language word of the year", and helps them say "yes" to things that support it, and "no" to all the shiny new apps someone might recommend at some point π

Stop telling yourself what you "should" be doing in your language studies to make progress. Instead, focus on what you GET to do while also making progress. If you're not enjoying the journey, you're going to make yourself miserable and more likely to quit. Again.

The reason you don't stick to your study plans in the new year? It's not you're not CAPABLE of it. It's because you haven't made a plan that aligns with the REAL you. You keep making a plan for the fantasy version of yourself you want to be, ignoring what you need to stay consistent...

When you realize you've been saying the French pronunciation of a word your entire life and you didn't realize there was another way to say a word. Are you team HOME-AGE or team OMAGE? For 'Homage'?

Whenever someone wants to speak about dialects and asks "why don't you pronounce the h in herb" I'm like....do we say honest with an H? Hour? Honor? Heir? Homage? Honesty?

Not you adding more study tasks to your plate like your collecting Pokemon. You literally DON'T need to do more in your language studies. You just need to do more of the right things. Make it lighter. Make it fit your needs and energy right now.

Do you know how cool it is to edit a video and realize that in recording, whenever I'm referencing another idea I can say, I have another video (or a blog post) on this topic? Like, I actually have a library of resources that I can reference and I'm shocked every time. π

Someone recently shared how they've been learning a language for a few years, can have decent conversations, but they hesitate to consider themselves "fluent". And they wondered when the transition from "I'm learning" to "I'm fluent" happens. This is what I told them:

When you try to speak in other languages that you've been studying, but the words just don't come to mind, the problem usually isn't vocabulary, it's recall. (And sentence building skills π )
