loading . . . Reminder: Windows 10 Ends on October 14th In the past year here, I’ve casually mentioned how much Windows has moved _away_ from being consumer-friendly, and more inched closer and closer to being probably the _most hostile_ operating system to users ever created. Microsoft has gone from launching spyware as a service (Recall), to killing Windows 10, which was once said, and supposed to be, _the last_ version of Windows Microsoft would ever release. That, unfortunately, was not the case. And, if your PC doesn’t have a specific processor, or ones newer than it, in a little over three weeks you’ll be using a dead operating system ripe for attack from script kiddies and hackers. And, your only option? Buy a brand new PC! Or, is that really your only option?
It’s no secret that I’ve become an evangelist for Linux, and even more-so, a Linux evangelist who constantly talks about how _dead easy_ it was and is to get _most_ games running (Steam, Lutris), so that you can continue your career of getting dubs, and ditch the AI and bloat riddled Windows, _for good_. Of course, you _do_ have to say goodbye to Call of Duty, and Fortnite, but CoD is largely unplayable because of the intrusive kernel-level anti-cheat, which, I’ve said before, _*should be illegal_ , and Fortnite is unplayable, because Tim Sweeney is a massive idiot (there are cheaters on both Linux and Windows).
Never-the-less, if you have a relatively recent iPhone or Android/Google phone, you can play Fornite again.
I’ve also written at least one guide on getting up-and-running in Debian, a very stable, and one of the oldest Linux distros to exist, and you can check that out here. It’s also completely viable even now with Trixie being its latest release (I know, because I tested it out myself).
I _also_ , also have a little forum where you can talk about Linux related things, and, if I have the time, I can help you troubleshoot issues you may be having, especially in regard to getting a game running. Outside of that, I would also recommend to the Lutris community forums, which are _very_ active.
But, what if you don’t _want_ Linux? Well, I’m afraid your options are limited, outside of that.
If you’re not opposed to MacOS, it is also one of the most stable operating systems I’ve ever used, and having had a Macbook now for about three years, I’ve experienced zero crashes, and it still works, to this day. Not all games work on Mac, but a lot of them do, and until more recent updates, Sims 4 _was_ pretty stable (I’m still trying to figure out why it suddenly lags a whole lot more). If you’re in the market for a Macbook, I would recommend looking through refurbished models, first. You can get the _exact_ laptop I have for 337 USD, on Backmarket.com.
If you’re one of those people who has actually paid for access to Windows in the past, that’s equivalent to paying for Windows … twice. _Twice_.
Or, if you’re really adventurous, you can download and install TempleOS.
But anyway, on October 14 of this year (2025), Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 10.
This is bad, because that means it’ll no longer be receiving security updates, or likely any updates at all. Which means malware, viruses, script kiddies, all of these things suddenly become something you have to worry about. Maybe _even more_ , since Windows has pretty much always been vulnerable to this stuff. Does anyone else have experience with the virus that would routinely remove the Windows antivirus scanner if you just so happened to download the _wrong_ Windows update?
While you totally _could_ just keep using Windows 10, despite all of this, I wouldn’t recommend it.
I would not recommend doing this unless your activity on a PC or a laptop encompasses nothing more than writing in an internet-disconnected word processor.
Either way, I feel like Octoboer is going to be an eye-opening month for Microsoft, or maybe it won’t be. Who knows. But despite what Mikeysoft thinks of your data and your privacy, _you_ should be the one who takes it seriously. You gotta ask yourself, “Is sticking around in Valorant and Call of Duty more important than my privacy, and the integrity of my sensitive information and data?” https://mkultra.monster/tech/2025/09/21/windows-10-end-of-life/
