I built a homelab monitor on top of Stylus and hooked it up to a cheap little 7" HDMI screen. It worked a lot better than expected. I love these glanceable displays that can give you a bunch of information in an instant The video walks through how to set it up and monitor some unifi & other devices

I think this screen is a perfect fit for a Stylus live display. Not my real home network status yet, but that's a good PoC

I spent a few days on and off debugging why my gstreamer/RTSP camera screen was failing. It turned out to be that the Pi was falling back to 100mbit because of a network cable issue. That shouldn't cause issues with 3mbps camera streams by itself, buuuuuuut....

For kicks I rejected the terms of service on my LG tv post update and it warned me with scary language that nothing was going to work after it rebooted. Turned out that it was just fine? I guess it had a tantrum over being unable to legally spy on us.

I published the source for the Pi-based Unifi RTSP stream viewer on Github. It's using Rust to control a gstreamer pipeline that renders directly to the framebuffer at a pretty decent frame rate. Added some goodies like image views, camera titles and a real-time clock. github.com/mmastrac/pi-...

I think this video turned out well but it certainly has me thinking about the right way to code in a video that's still entertaining. I think only a few creators have managed to pull this off.

I managed to survive a multi-decade software career without ever once working with autotools/configure outside of just running them and praying.

Phew, 100% declarative protocol definitions for PostgreSQL and EdgeDB/Gel are done. Metadata and simple-ish codegen allows me to experiment with struct shapes and APIs and tune perf without rewriting _everything_ for two different DB protocols.

My strongly-held opinion: for everyone's sanity every feature git-committed by a team should be squashed and rebased. Merging has its place, but should be reserved for large-scale repo actions.

I've been working on a little Rust-based CLI-command testing utility to pattern-match stdout/stderr. Docs are pretty minimal right now, but it allows for ordered, unordered, and optional sequences of grok-like patterns. I think it's going to turn out to be pretty useful... crates.io/crates/clitest
