Thing is, the Green Lantern isn't one guy. It's a franchise, like McDonald's. Every backwater planet has one.

I like the origin story of Hal Jordan (Chuck Yeager finds a dying alien, takes his ring and becomes a superhero), but past that, there's just nothing there.

John Stewart replaced Hal Jordan as the default Green Lantern, and I'm... kind of okay with this? Hal Jordan is a nothingburger of a character. John Stewart is a gruff-ass Marine who's too manly to date anyone other than other space valkyries and chicks with animal powers, but he has a personality.

There's a difference between a quality cartoon and cynical slop, and you become acutely aware of this line with age and experience. Blame it on growing up with both Batman: The Animated Series and Yogi's Ark.

The reality of The Boondocks isn't my own, but it's smartly written and constructed, and uses outrageous humor to drive home a point (typically with more subtlety than South Park, although the MLK episode is at least as self-indulgent). Care was put into its creation. It has purpose.

Adult cartoons used to be a safe bet for viewing, but I think that all changed with Family Guy. First couple of seasons were smart-ish. Then you got to the manatee humor. This was followed by shows like Drawn Together which were written to stripmine amusement from cruelty and cynicism.

And yeah, I've gotten laughs from random shows like Family Guy and Robot Chicken (which is at least honest about what it is; a hodgepodge of random pop culture nonsense). But you know, if you're going to invest thousands of frames of animation into a cartoon, make it MATTER.

Aaron MacGruder understood, as did the early writers of The Simpsons, that when you make a cartoon for adults, you have to have the solid framework of a plot, and even a subplot to make sure the viewers are paying attention. It can't just be random jokes. They must be contextualized.

Boondocks was an exceptional adult cartoon, with the depth of plot and characterization you DIDN'T see in contemporaries like Family Guy. You notice this stuff. You can separate the wheat from the chaff pretty well after thirty years of Saturday morning cartoons.

It's not that I'm a black history buff... I'm an animation buff, and the two intersect more often than you'd expect. Bruce W. Smith has done a TON of stuff over the years. The late Dwayne McDuffie gave us Static Shock, and wrote episodes of the DCAU in its later years. James Tucker did Brave/Bold.

I'm sorry, Keith David is a fantastic actor, but Doc Facilier looks more like a Chris Tucker in overall frame and frantic behavior. Some people compared him to Oscar Proud (played by Tommy Davidson), and that's not a surprise... Bruce W. Smith worked on both that show and this flick.

Look, I wanted to smash that firefly into glowing paste the moment I saw him. And you're going to drag Arsenio Gargoyles to hell for that? Nay, I say, nay!

Okay, so Doc Facilier had one of the coolest deaths of any Disney villain, no small feat. But evidently the part where he went over to the dark side for good was when he squashed that skeezy Cajun firefly? I would have given him a medal for that. Don't take him to hell, he did the world a favor!

Animaniacs (the 2020 sequel) is $10 on Fandango at Home right now, if anyone is interested. For the price I had to bite!

The whole thing is kind of clever, but more annoying. You know how The Proud Family is a show you can tolerate for maybe 22 minutes, but you wouldn't dare binge watch it? Jellystone is like that, but worse. Typically one 11 minute episode is plenty for the day.

So there's a show called Jellystone, where all the characters from Hanna-Barbera cartoons live in a Hanna-Barbera town. And for whatever reason, Yogi Bear is the doctor, and he's every bit as terrible at it as you would expect.

Finding a place to post babyfur artwork without restrictions or resistance has become so difficult for me that the juice is no longer worth the squeeze. Hell, it's all squeeze for no juice. Might as well go back and draw Byrons on a notepad like I did in my twenties.

I would LIKE to post more babyfur artwork to BlueSky, but the recent bans of several members makes me extremely reluctant to do that. If this inconveniences you, talk to the management.

Trying some Rainbow Rose (hope I don't fall off the sides!). It's got that green broccoli taste, but with a tart edge that's hard to quantify.

One thing that bugs me about Star Trek Voyager is that when they had an advanced replacement for the Holo-doc, it was friggin' ANDY DICK. Look, there is no universe in which Andy Dick is an upgrade from Robert Picardo.
