Honestly, Cheech and Chong's first movie, Up in Smoke, was kind of crap. Awful image quality and two hours of aimless wandering through what the film generously called a plot. I remember the one with Pee-Wee Herman in it being better from all observable angles.

Oh yeah, turns out the "Cheech" name came from when Cheech was a baby. In his crib, he looked like a chiccharone, or fried pork skin. That could apply to any baby in swaddling clothes though, couldn't it?

And you just know he was perfecting that character in high school, making fun of one of the especially prissy nuns behind her back. Talk about vocational training!

Cheech's main shtick, of course, is his hyperactive Chicano, but he can do other stuff! Like that humorless nun Sister Mary Elephan. Did you know Cheech got that character from being in Catholic school for a year? A place where color did not exist... only the beige flash of a nun's ruler.

What was Tommy Chong playing, post Cheech and Chong? A yak in a Disney movie, which was just Chong being Chong. A bookstore owner on That 70s Show, which was just Chong being Chong.

See, Cheech is a talented actor. He's got range, he's got creativity, he's got enthusiasm out the wazoo. He reminds me a lot of Robin Williams in that respect. The problem with Chong is that while he claims to be a good director, he's not an actor. He's a straight man, and that's as far as it goes.

The film's chronology extends pretty far back in their respective careers, and ends prematurely, at Cheech's first film Born in East LA. The film makes some nods to their solo efforts, but the ride is over once you reach the Corsican Brothers.

So I watched Cheech and Chong's Last Movie. It's a documentary, albeit one with some of the tropes of a Cheech and Chong movie. It's funny seeing Chong in his early music career, where he looks like a vaguely Asian Buddy Holly.
