April is National Arab American Heritage Month. Jack Shaheen, a Lebanese American, was born in Pittsburgh in 1935. He was an author and professor who documented and pushed back on harmful stereotypes of Arabs in American media. He was a lifelong Steelers fan and graduated from Carnegie Tech (CMU).

Elizabeth Ware was recording secretary for the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union in Pittsburgh in 1997. Born in East Liberty, her father was a union man who worked in the Homestead steel mills. She became one of the first African Americans hired at the Heinz plant.

Katherine Johnson, a Black woman, worked for NASA for decades and did the calculations that allowed astronauts to land on the Moon. At the time, it was common for women to be "computers," the people who did computations. Women also did calculations that cracked the Nazi enigma code decades before.

Mary Cardwell Dawson, born in Homestead, started the Cardwell School of Music in East Liberty in 1925 and in 1941, she opened the National Negro Opera Company which would perform in Washington D.C., New York City, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.

Margaret Darin Stasik was the first recording secretary of the United Electrical workers union (UE) for East Pittsburgh Local 601 in 1935. She fought for "Equal Pay for Equal Work" supporting women's rights in the workplace. Her papers are housed at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fannie Sellins was a labor organizer in the late 19th and early 20th century in Pittsburgh. Her husband was killed while their 4 children were young. Many years later, during a strike against the Allegheny Steel coal companies, she was also killed during a strike by a company gunman.

Martha Graham, the woman who revolutionized modern dance, was born on the North Side (then known as Allegheny City) in 1894. She was invited to the 1936 Olympics held in Nazi Germany despite being Jewish, but rejected the invitation. Graham was the first dancer to perform at the White House in 1938.

Sophie Masloff became Pittsburgh's first female Mayor in 1988. She was born to Romanian Jewish parents and grew up in the Hill District, which was a multiethnic immigrant community at the time. She is known for privatizing many city assets such as the Zoo, the Aviary and Phipps.

Rachel Carson, an alumnus of Chatham, is known around the world for her ground breaking book Silent Spring, which helped kickstart the environmental movement in the US. The 9th Street Bridge is named for her.

On this day in 1965, Daisy Lampkin, a leading Black suffragist and civil rights activist died at 81. Having organized the 1931 National Convention in Pittsburgh, she brought future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to the NAACP alongside record setting numbers of members.

Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman was born in Cochran's Mills outside of Pittsburgh in 1864, known as Nellie Bly. She moved to the North Side (then Allegheny City) in 1880. At only 20, she wrote a series of investigative articles on female factory workers for the Pittsburgh Dispatch.

Did you know? Women couldn't have credit cards on their own until 1974. Legal work done by late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg laid the foundation for the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.

Jane Swisshelm (1815-1884) was a Radical Republican journalist, publisher, abolitionist and women's rights advocate. She was the first woman in the Senate press gallery, published a weekly abolitionist newspaper and worked as a nurse during the Civil War before retiring in Swissvale.
