As part of a new research project, I'm going to start sharing some images of women cellists in art. Day 1: Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931), "Kirsti spielt das Cello" I don't know much about the artist, but Kirsti looks like a person of strong opinions and imperviousness to fire hazards.

I only learned at 7pm that it was International Cello Day. Oh well, I guess I celebrated in my own way by spending the entire day with my three-armed boyfriend Hugo Becker, his exceptional book on cello playing, and his wildly romantic composition Liebesleben ("Love Life") 🎻🎻🎻

While on my usual lookout for historical images of women cellists (first stages of a new research project, stay tuned), I stumbled across this painting, "Music-Making Angels" (1628) by Peter Paul Rubens and was intrigued as to why all the angels were playing the instruments wrong-handed.

Join my colleagues and me next Tuesday, October 28, for an all-Shostakovich recital commemorating 50 years since his death in 1975. I wrote my doctoral dissertation on Shostakovich's cello sonata and his second piano trio has been on my bucket list for many years, so I'm really excited about this.

The final concert of the Idaho Bach Festival featured @uidahomusic cellists Katrina, Ryan, Evan, Dylan, and Cole, who gave a beautiful recital of baroque music arranged for 5 cellos. The cello studio is the best it's ever been and I'm bursting with pride at their achievements.

#idahobachfestival starts Monday! Opening night kicks off with the UI Early Music Ensemble, Tues 10/21 features @uidahomusic faculty, and Wed 10/22 is the Idaho Cello Ensemble and Vandaleers. All events in Haddock Performance Hall at 7:30, see you there!

Last week it occurred to me that while Prokofiev's Cello-Piano Sonata op. 119 is one of the pieces I've performed the most in my career, I've never actually played his lesser-known Solo Sonata Op. 134. A score has been procured. This is going to happen.

Today in Hugo Becker research: sing your repertoire using German words to teach correct emphasis. For example, "Kampfbereit" (ready for war) in Dvorak's cello concerto. This is basically a metaphor for Becker's entire, needlessly argumentative worldview. I love him.

Very distracted by a detail from the cover of Adrien-François Servais's Caprices. The cello-playing angel is holding the cello way too low with a terrible left-hand setup and an even worse bow hold. This angel needs Servais to teach her better form, or at least share his endpin with her 😂🎻

What do cellists keep in their cases? For me, it's as little as possible! Cello, bows, rosin (usually Pirastro), strings (usually Spirocore), and a cleaning cloth. Also, a bag with scores, electronics, and a strap in case of marble or tile floors... www.thestrad.com/playing-hub/...
