Plato's like: Hold my beer.

Villeneuve kind of lost me, so much I'm not even sure I want to see this film, despite being a Dune fan in general, and a big Sci-Fi fan. Something happened to his film making once he got enormous budgets going. It's a deathnell to "visionary" directors to get their way without appropriate friction.

It's a pity. It got to a point, a long time ago, where I realized that Zizek was basically: "I'm just going to say Opposite Stuff." It became a shtick which clouded and then eventually completely occluded possibly interesting ideas for me.

I'm kind of with Sophocles on this. Odysseus was a degradation of Achilles so I have a hard time getting up for an Odyssey by the sedate Batman guy. Odysseus is an anti-Hero, marking the end of the confluence of honor and performance and I can't get into the wending of his ways. #TeamAchilles.

Quietly spectacular in 3 Women (how does she get that strange hypnotically positive effect across? "Hi, Tom"), and underrated in Thieves Like Us...her "Yes"s are so memorable and precious, founding the meaning of the whole film.

Greatest car chase in film history. The idle to roar of the engines set is up by the lengthy preamble of slow, quiet, masculine-reserve character study. It captures the American fascination with the automobile engine as bottled up (& released) aggression. Masterpiece founded on Steve McQueen cool.

What is the "hack"? Nothing but a method of extraction...which means attempting to rip out the "productive part" of a living, embodied, richly imbued practice. How to be able to "do" without having to "undergo".

A very good point, and this reputed "conflation" runs right up through the history of Philosophy and into Hegel's entire "productive" use of the "negative". Isabelle/Gena. My wife pointed out that the famous subway scene in Possession & Gena's "possessed" wall-banging scenes (1st by the ghost of her younger self & then drunkenly, self-possessedly, fighting to perform) were in spiritual parallel. Gena's may have been a Żuławski inspiration. #cinema

Did a double feather tonight. Dracula's Daughter (1936) again, and Rowland in Opening Night (1977). There really felt parallels in Gloria Holden and Gena Rowland's character portrayals. Aging incredibly beautiful women trapped by script & past. Female Monsters of great aura.

Mademoiselle (1966). Not easy to find, highly recommended. Can't stop thinking about it. A Genet story, a "witch" archetype female lead in a small French town. Most extraordinary is how the film communicates metaphysical crisis by BREAKING composition in wides...with characters at the edge of frame.

There seems to be some direct line between Joe Rogan's “I'm not an expert, I'm just asking questions.” and the AI Chat Bot's: “I'm not an expert, I'm just answering questions.” It's that we've come to view information as entertainment.

The way in which Spinoza - practically the arch Determinist - participates in indeterminism.

I think with the rise of Chat bot writing (including its subsumption of all writing that it can feed into itself) its becoming a political act to write in a way that a bot wouldn't. This goes aside from even questions of aesthetics or communication. Just as industry made "craftsmanship" imperative.

This seems like an apt visualization of a worthy philosophical position on the Self.

One reason why Spinoza - arguably - is a capitalist philosopher. His conatus idealizes the hyper-commodified form, by which anything is exchangeable for anything else...& why Deleuze tries to "correct" that by focusing on singularization/event, perhaps a correction built into Capitalism itself.

Just a top shelf film. Pretty incredible work in the wake of Polanski (and others of course).

One thing I'm not sure of - in the rather widespread use of Spinoza by the Left - is whether Spinoza, himself, was anti-Capitalist...living at the birthtime of Corporate trade Capitalism. I rather suspect not. Which leaves us to imagine...is it the development of Capitalism which he would oppose?

Getting very pedantic about it, it's not possible for two individuals to be "entirely of the same nature" because if there is no difference between the two, then it wouldn't be two people it would just be the one person. This poses a problem core to his politics, and I am unsure how to resolve it

This was just in passing in a Spinoza discussion, but it really is an aspect of Spinoza's sociability reasoning that really has bothered me. The logic: Unified "sameness" grounds combinatory power. Some problematics. Man + Man (not woman)? Adult + Adult (not youth)? White + White (not of color)? ETC

Much of the past is like this. We live in a fantasy of what has been, when it has been and why it has been.

"Reactionary" (things accused to be as such) is not just an impulse to return to homeostasis (a stuckness), it can also just be a tuning into a line of flight that would otherwise break up or disintegrate. A balancing of a critical line that need not be stable.

In Philosophy there can be a confusion over what has been meant by "suffering", which is of a larger concept "to undergo". And the relationship of this to "experience", to "go out - of risk, to try". To go under, and to go out. It is a conceptual (spatial) loom.
