I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite

Also, it seems easier to imagine giving your child the best start in life (an adaptation strategy) than actively working to *collectively* transform unjust living arrangements (a mitigation strategy). Crisis realism makes adaptation preferable to mitigation in despicable ways.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 209: Not all writing needs to “lead somewhere.” Joy is a valid end in itself. So is practice: everything you write makes you better writer.

Writing is scary. Creepy. Being a reader, I also dread being a bad writer. I also know I may not be alone in feeling this way. I’m trying to rekindle a writing practice that is more public. I’ve found writing brief book reviews helpful. I’m hoping to write more in the new year.
