This looks like weathered olivine right? This olivine-phyric dike would be the only one I've encountered within the Koʻolau Caldera where hydrothermal alteration was extensive and unforgiving. It looks similar to Makapuʻu-stage (≤2.6 ma) picrites further south. #geology #geoscience #picrite #dike

End of a hike over the subaerial Koko Rift from Hanauma to Kaupō. A sweatiest me standing on Kaupō flow (basanite) with Makapuʻu (tholeiitic picrites-basaltic andesite) rising behind. Olivine is the only phenocryst of Kaupō which have some of the highest MgO on the Koko Rift. #geology #geoscience

#Spinel #Lherzolite Honolulu Volcanics peridotites (but not pyroxenites) are notable for their lack of hydrous minerals suggesting cryptic metasomatism. Olivines of the most Si02-undersaturated lavas/pyroclastics have rather larnitic rims, something my mind associates with carbonatite metasomatism.

Pyroxenite xenoliths of #mantle origin were erupted from only 3 Hawaiʻi rejuvenation vents, composite #peridotite - #pyroxenite xenoliths are rarer and may reflect opx dissolution. Revisiting this Oʻahu sample from January, no visible garnet in handsample but cool nonetheless. #geology #geoscience

Unlike Sunstone Knoll which is quite tholeiitic, such #plagioclase megacryst porphyritic lavas of my home island of #Oʻahu are transitional between #calc-alkaline and #alkaline. We have one calc-alkaline flow formed via hydrous anatexis, the Mauna Kūwale rhyodacite. #geology #geoscience #mineral
