Species Abundance Targets for England. An official statistic in development. We have structured annual monitoring for birds, bats, moths & butterflies, but obviously missing many groups. New ambition includes over 1000 species from more groups incl plants: www.gov.uk/government/s... #BES2024

In DEFRA Monitoring tells us what is happening, Evaluation tells why trends revealed by monitoring are happening. Both are going to be important, but making these processes effective and efficient are key imo #BES2024

Oooh a phrase I hear all the time in ecology: 'the ecological balance between predator & prey'. I'm intrigued by what people mean by this exactly. It often comes with ideas of predators controlling & regulating prey. My sense is that it creates an overly simplified understanding of nature #BES2024

Biodiversity & climate change crises are wicked problems. Solutions need to reflect that complexity by building solution communities & systems. We all need to work towards creating interacting & evolving socio-ecological sustainable systems www.daniellocke.com/24-hour-comic #BES2024

Investment in nature based solutions is $200 billion (which is more than it used to be) but current investment in extraction and activities that drive nature destruction over $5 trillion (Gov subsidies + private finance)! We are still pouring fuel on the fire #BES2024

First up we have Prof Nathalie Seddon to present on Transforming nature-based solutions. She starts by reflecting on the power of the sounds of nature as an uplifting way to engage with nature. But then switching to the dire state of nature and the climate and the importance of ecologists. #BES2024
