9 My father and I called the game “But What About,” But my uncle called it “The Baron Stories.” It was not until months later that I learned Who The Baron was.

8 And suddenly the princess and the urchin Were traveling the kingdom in a new adventure. And then my uncle would say, “But what about the fisherman  who lived on the edge of the kingdom?” And so the fisherman would meet the princess And offer her his latest catch.

7 I might begin a story about a princess in a castle, And then he would say, “But what about the street urchin that lived  On the road to the castle?”

6 As the months began to pass, My uncle and I had turned the storytelling into a sort of game. I would begin a story, and he would interrupt,  But now not with a question, but a statement.

5 Like when the children found the candy house was infested with ants. Or when the bird, so upset that the sausage had found a new home Flew off to eat the sausage’s wife, a cob of corn. Or a girl taming the wild tornado. Without knowing it, they helped me grow into a storyteller.

4 As time went on, I was even bored of those stories, And I began to make up things, Telling more of a story I wanted to tell Then what was in the books I had memorized. The times I remember most fondly I made them laugh, Like when the children found the candy house was infested with ants.

3 And when I would get to a part I could not remember, My Uncle with prompt me with a question That was more of a hint of the next part of the story Then a curious inquiry.

2 At first, I would tell the stories only as I remembered them. Two children in a wood following a path to a candy house. A sausage, a bird and a rat living in a house together. A young girl traveling on a tornado.

1 From then on, we would begin our day as normal. Sometimes when I was worn out from walking And my father’s shoulders were too sore from me, We would stop for a meal or a snack And I would tell those stories.

13 He did not know then that once I started telling him the stories I would never stop. And that The Tumult would be listening.

12 And my uncle said, “Well then young lad, why don’t you tell them to me.”

11 My father turned to me and said, “He has his books.” I interrupted, “But, father, I’ve read them all. Three times through. I’m tired of all those stories.”

10 My father muttered under his breath, and my uncle responded, “He needs something to do, something that will keep him busy, something to do for the long term. We’ve got a long way to go.”

9 I looked up at him and droned, “But I’m bored.” I am sure I said it as winey as I possibly could.

8 I felt my uncle’s arm across my shoulders. “Child now is not the time to bother your father. He has things to do.”

7 And probably he was exhausted. The walking, the caring for the two of us, My neediness of me as a child, my uncle’s as an old man, Worries about The Vase losing its aura. Probably he just needed a day’s rest.

6 I suppose I was given a book or something to keep myself busy, But I wasn’t interested, and I probably said so. Probably I was grumpy.

5 Uncle sat against a tree pouring water into our water bags, And father had begun to pack the canvas tent. I am sure I did my best to help, But on that morning, he pushed me away as a nuisance.

4 The birds were quiet, not ready to share their tune. Even the ants hid that morning.

3 Outside the canvas tent the sun was bright And fighting to shed the frost from branches Without a concern about what loomed. The flying insects we shared our day with  had not yet begun to pester.

2 I do remember that day it was cold when we woke, And The Vase had taken on a violet hue Like it did just before The Tumult struck.
