I joined UCU not just for representation, but to reshape the structures that were producing harm. Activism became survival strategy. NEC involvement followed from branch work — bargaining, disputes, equality motions, pushing disability from the margins to the centre of industrial strategy.

How did you get involved in UCU? I got involved because disability and precarity leaves you with a choice: isolation or collectivisation. I was sitting on my bed in a hospital and I thought can fight this and that I wanted to stand up for truth and justice. So I started doing just that.

What kinds of barriers do disabled staff face in higher education? Physical barriers like inaccessible labs or buildings are obvious, but cultural barriers are just as significant. Delayed or inconsistent adjustments, high-pressure workload allocations, and casualised contracts create real stress.

Defending London Met and preparing to take part the anti casualisation annual general meeting. Hidden redundancies just as real as compulsory redundancies. Much solidarity to all workers in dispute ❤️
