Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th commemorates victims of transphobic violence. Established in 1999 by to honour Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman murdered in 1998. The day highlights ongoing violence against the transgender community and ensures those lost are remembered.

On This Day... Film Director James Whale is born in Dudley, England. He directed such classics as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein and lived openly as gay man throughout his career, which was virtually unheard of in the 1920s and 1930s. Whale died by suicide in 1957.

International Non-Binary People’s Day is observed each year on the 14th July and aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by non-binary people around the world. This important day shines a light on those who identify as non-binary and celebrates the community’s diversity and gender identities.

The week's recommendation is the 1961 film Victim. The film follows a closeted, gay, married lawyer who goes after a blackmail ring after his lover is found dead. One of the first films to handle the subject in a sympathetic way it led to the softening of attitudes towards homosexuality in the UK.

Spain, 1901. The first documented same-sex marriage in Spain was performed. Marcela & Elisa are married by a priest with Elisa using the identity Mario. It is believed the couple fled to Argentina after being exposed, the marriage was never annulled and it's unknown what happened to them after this.
