Depends on the character and story. I would say a rough concept usually starts EITHER with a design in mind, or a story beat that inspires me about them. And then built up and expanded in a way that suits the characters.

Depends on the story you are telling, and to what audience. To me, I generally assign romantic and sexual orientation relatively soon after getting to know the characters because I like to. But it's not always important, it doesn't always come up. And that's okay!

Apprentice will always do everything in her power to keep Xarseth alive, and will go nuclear if that fails. Her morality is kept in check solely by him in the party. Savari will do what her Patron tells her to, regardless of the result. Rasiri will try to help others, no matter how far gone.

Openly if somehow the timeline shifted and Xarseth and Alice met as children, they would have effectively adopted each other. In a lot of ways, it would have been better for them as they'd be as close to siblings as can be. Xarseth would never have become a spy, Alice would have never become a Lich.

Sometimes. Usually something isn't working, or something happens in my life that makes me bitter towards the project. I like to say I keep every character I have, but some I put on a shelf until I'm ready to pick them up again for a new project likely.

A trait I find endearing? For Apprentice it's that she is Evil despite herself, it's a tragic thing. She is working morally to goodness, her motives are fueled entirely by her love of others, but her nature is inherently Evil and something she fights every step of the way. With help at times.
