PERSON OF THE DAY. 9 June 2014. Rik Mayall (aged 56) died in London from a sudden heart attack after returning home from a jogging session. He rose to national fame in the anarchic BBC comedy sitcom The Young Ones and became one of Britain’s favourite comedians.

FACT OF THE DAY. 9 June 1920. Imperial War Museum was opened by King George V at the Crystal Palace, London. It originally recorded the British war effort during WW1. The museum has since expanded to include all conflicts in which British or Commonwealth forces have been involved since 1914.

Private Joseph Stephenson, Royal Scots, enlisted on his birthday in 1915 and died of wounds and gas poisoning on his birthday three years later, in 1918. The 28-year-old from Ashton-under-Lyne left behind a widow and two children. 📍Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil 🇫🇷

The same day, the RAF Victory Flypast passed over East Anglia with hundreds of aircraft, including 12 Lancaster bombers, flying down past Colchester and over the Colne Estuary on the way to London.

Not a bad summary of where the country found itself in the summer of 1946. The parade came a year after VE Day and VJ Day, when more troops had finally returned home. British forces, Commonwealth, allied nations, and the home front were all represented.

The Colchester Then & Now Project found this in the museum archive: Colchester High Street on the day of the Victory Parade, June 1946. Eighty years ago this month. The banner stretching across the street reads: "Thank God for Peace. Work for Prosperity."

The first Tallboy 12,000 lb earthquake bombs were dropped on the Saumur rail tunnel on the night of 8-9 June 1944 to hinder German reinforcements heading to Normandy. Nineteen Tallboy-equipped Lancasters of 617 Squadron attacked the target, which was destroyed with no aircraft losses.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 8 June 1955. Tim Berners-Lee was born in London. He’s best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web by proposing an information management system on 12 March 1989 and by implementing 1st successful internet communication in mid-November 1989.

FACT OF THE DAY. 8 June 1949. George Orwell’s futuristic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was published in the UK. It depicts a totalitarian tyranny ruled by “Big Brother” and supported by a secret police using mass surveillance. More broadly, Orwell shows how facts are manipulated by governments.

Edward the Black Prince died 650 years ago today on 8th June 1376.

In the 1980s my Dad, a #WW2 veteran, compiled a Normandy Roll of Honour by analysing the CWGC registers manually: it took him years! Using his work these are some of the highest losses among British & Canadian units that day. These figures are for the dead only. #DDay82

1/2 #OnThisDay - 8 June 1599, the Constable of #ColchesterCastle, Henry MacWilliam, who had succeeded his father (also called Henry), as Constable in 1586, was killed in a duel.

It’s important to remember that alongside those storming the beaches and seizing bridges were men like Private Robert Ridout, an airborne soldier of the Army Catering Corps, who was killed on D-Day+1 while attached to 225 Parachute Field Ambulance. 📍Ranville Churchyard 🇫🇷

New Zealand soldiers of the II Anzac Corps watching Mark IV tanks advancing to attack German positions on 7 June 1917, the opening day of the Battle of Messines. British fighter aircraft had flown over the German lines to camouflage the sound of the tanks as they drove to their starting points.

The war diary for 70 FA shows that Sgt Hillman, along with 16 privates and a captain were sent to operate out of Railway Dugouts ADS in preparation for the battle. Whilst there, at 8am, a shell landed in the doorway, killing 9 and wounding 6 others. (3/3)

His service records show that he attested on 29/8/14 into the RAMC, was promoted to Cpl in April 15 and then Sgt in April 16. His personal details also show that he married Amy Preece on 26/12/16 and his home address was now 2 Duke St. (2/3)

Thread: #OTD in 1917, the Battle for Messines Ridge started and Sgt Roger Hillman of 70th Field Ambulance from Blackheath, Staffordshire was killed. One of 6 children, he was a warehouseman pre-war. (1/3)

Battle of Messines 7th-14th June 1917. Irish Peace Park commemorates the Irish of Ireland sitting on a section of the Messines & Wytschaete Ridge. An idea born by two Irish men which through their commitment & dedication saw coming to fruition with the memorial being inaugurated in November 1998.

82 years ago today my grandfather, who lied about his age to enlist in the military, was in one of the first waves of landing crafts to hit the beaches of Normandy. He's been gone a long time now, but today I remember him and the other brave souls who fought and died for a righteous cause.

The RTR didn't land in France on 6th June 1944 but some RTR men did. Lt Monty Horley was commanding a DD tank in B Sqn the Notts Yeo and was one of, if not the first, tank to arrive on Gold beach (in sp of 1 Hants). His tank was hit and he and Tpr Worboys were killed as the evacuated the tank.

Nineteen-year-old Private Arthur Warner BEM, Parachute Regiment, was killed in action on D-Day, 6 June 1944. Almost four years earlier, he had been awarded the British Empire Medal for his work as a messenger during the Coventry Blitz in 1940. 📍Ranville War Cemetery 🇫🇷

#DDay82: When I visited Normandy for the first time in 1979 with my Dad we met Major John Howard DSO outside the Gondrée Café. By this time 81 years ago he and his men had taken the key bridges and the code words Ham & Jam signalling their capture filled the radio network.

Today marks 82 years since D-Day. In our collections you can find various accounts, and today we're highlighting the diaries of John Antony Crawford Hugill with his first hand account and the reminiscences of Admiral Sir Manley Power, written years later only relying on his memory...

PERSON OF THE DAY. 6 June 1968. At 1:44 AM Robert F. Kennedy (aged 42) died in a LA hospital of gun shot wounds. He had extensive neurosurgery to remove a bullet from his brain but he could not be saved. His death came nearly 26 hours after the shooting. Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of the murder.
