One thing I always liked in fantasy/RPG was the predilection for “Castle [Name]” rather than “[Name] Castle”. Castle Sengir and Castle Falkenstein sound a million times cooler than Windsor Castle

Somebody genuinely needs to run an experiment where they turn off social media in a town somewhere for like six months and see how that affects partisanship, mental health, life satisfaction, so on. I’m open to the possibility that it does nothing, but I think we should try and see!

Every year I become more convinced of my maxim: if you already have a platform, you don’t belong on social media. Social media should be for people who can’t put out press statements.

D’you ever get so tired you put on a podcast and sit on the couch and just… listen to it, without doing any other activities, like it’s the radio in the 1930s?

What you really want is a confusing blend of woke and unwoke, like a monarchist boss I once had who was extremely pro social programs because "the bourgeoisie hate the poor more than the aristocracy ever did"

I wrote this piece about Tamaki Yuichiro's recent rise to populist fame and how centrists are paving the way for a more anti-establishment politics (against their better judgments)

The center’s self-defeating politics
As Japan’s far-right gains political and ideological force, can the center hold? It is a familiar question, one that is now rapidly gaining salience after Takaichi Sanae was elected leader of the Libe...

I genuinely think there’s a generational “memory cutoff point”, beyond which history doesn’t really matter and people will just imagine that things were better, no matter what, no matter where.

I get DMs. Elaine: So are you seeing her again? Jerry: Nah, we were gonna go out but she’s observing a directional taboo. George: I thought she was observing a directional taboo last week. Jerry: Nah, she was on a pilgrimage last week. Elaine: *I* think she just doesn’t want to see you~

The Suica penguin has been the face of JR East's popular IC transit card since its inception in 2001. Now, the company says it will replace the iconic character with an as-yet-unannounced mascot. That's left fans both perplexed and irate.

Despite flying a lot, I think on some deep level my brain still thinks that the way flying works is: for every hour of flight time, you roll 2d10 for a 5% chance of “plane fall” (mechanical failure, turbulence, just random freak crash). So for a 10hr flight you have to survive 10 of those checks

So for the past two weeks I've been disconnected from k-pop fandom. I don't know who won anything, I don't know how much anything sold, I don't know who got a RAK, I don't know any rumors. Sometimes I put on a song and listen to it. Is this how most people listen to music?

So I finally made some progress in Hades II and I feel Oceanus is a much better level design than Asphodel, for instance. I still things some things are a bit _too_ cartoony though, like Scylla and her band, but it's fun!
