Update of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in DRC & Uganda - 2 July: --- DRC: On 1 July, DRC reported a total of 1406 confirmed cases, including 438 deaths. 73 new cases & 25 deaths were reported since the last update. --- EU/EEA: 1 confirmed case reported in France on 24 June.

Some (much needed) good news: @who.int just announced that the PARTNERS trial in the DRC has launched. They are enrolling patients now to test treatments against Bundibugyo, the virus causing the terrible Ebola outbreak there. 🧪 I wrote about the history and plans a few weeks ago in @science.org:

#Marburg in Uganda is confirmed. Uganda formally reported 1 case to #WHO today. A reliable source tells me there are actually 2 confirmed cases. The positive: Uganda is very good at containing outbreaks. The negative: Uganda doesn't like sharing news about them. Link below goes to updated story.

#Ebola update: DRC confirmed 33 new cases on 6/28. I think 17 of those cases are already dead. They bring the outbreak total in DRC to 1307 confirmed cases with 377 deaths. In recent days, confirmed case counts — ie the cases that are coming to light — have risen by the dozens. Long road ahead.
