If you can make it work financially, I couldn’t recommend getting an editor for your book before publishing more. Find someone whose feedback you trust and who’s just as excited about your work as you are and make your book the best possible version of itself it can be

Writing to me is a passion project. If I don’t feel passionate, I don’t write. I wish I was more consistent, but I’d rather be inconsistent and still love writing as much as I do than be consistent and feel like I’m working a second job

Compared to the challenges facing real trans people right now, writing about Jen fighting her way through a flying city of vampires feels disrespectful almost. The point of the series is to show a trans person overcoming adversity, but like, the world she’s trying to get home to is so much worse…

I sat down and wrote for something like 5-6 hours this weekend. Was in one of those flow states where I just go and the hours fly by. Been a really long time since I’ve been able to focus and create like that. Hoping it’s a sign of more to come!

My favorite twists to write are the ones that are possible to see coming. If you do it right, instead of a reveal being ‘shocking’ and only good once, you start building this sense of dread that leaves the first time reader praying they’re wrong and a repeat reader looking for the clues they missed

People buying book 2 in your series hit different. Buying book 1, maybe you liked the cover or thought it was a neat premise. No guarantee it’ll be read. But buying book 2? That means you’re along for the ride, and I’m so happy to have you here :)

I started writing Outcasts in 2017, and the first season was the first story I put to paper that I actually finished. Was it any good? Jury’s out on that one. But it meant a lot to me then, and I really want to do it justice now. Stay tuned! Hopefully Outcasts book 1 will be out soon!

Playing a fantasy RPG is research if you predominantly write fantasy, right?

Met with my lovely editor last night to discuss developmental edits to The Outcasts, the first in a series of superhero novels! I actually wrote the screenplay for 4.5 seasons worth of episodes of Outcasts over the last several years, thrilled finally adapt the first set of episodes into a novel!

A lot of times when I ask people if they’ve gotten around to reading Hormones, they tell me they’re too busy reading Brandon Sanderson but they’ll get to my books eventually. It’s fun being rivals with someone a million times more successful than you and who’ll likely never know you exist, lol

I love when folks highlight a bit of my book that made them laugh or cry or feel something and send it to me to let me know My stories mean the world to me and seeing them touch others in a similar way is so inspiring

My goal is to read 25 books this year, preferably those written by queer folx and women. Picked up A Marvelous Light by @freyamarske.bsky.social at my local bookstore, enjoying it so far! The leads have such great chemistry, I can’t wait to see how things develop!

I spent years developing a character for my next novel in my mind, but I didn't really know her until I wrote a paragraphs in her voice this week. Turns out the writing itself reveals the character & I should have just started writing her ages ago.

I love my stories, but I’m always afraid that I’m the only one who will. Getting a manuscript back from my editor with constructive but overall positive and excited comments is such a relief

World building is something else. You come up with a cool idea like “secret vampire utopia in the sky” and have to consider fun things like “do vampires piss?” to determine what kind of infrastructure they’ve got. So uh, hey Internet. Do vampires piss? 😅

My greatest inspiration for writing is and always has been reading/watching something with an exciting premise, being disappointed, and then trying to tell the story I’d actually wanted to experience. I aspire to someday disappoint someone enough to goad them into telling a better story

Somehow, writing and re-writing a full-length novel set in a fully original fantasy world with complex, relevant politics and magic systems is less daunting than thinking of something witty to post online
