TLDR: I believe Toothpaste is a neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartrami) and people are probably conflating the Japanese flying squids (Todarodes pacificus) with the neon flying squid even though they’re in completely different subfamilies

It will probably now forever be my pet peeve that people think the second image is a “Japanese flying squid” when it’s actually the first image. Real Japanese flying squids don’t have those membranes and I’m pretty sure they don’t have that coloration

I don’t think I’ve ever really specified what species of flying squid TP is meant to be, since “flying squid” is not really specific to any particular species (it is a family) She was originally modeled after a neon flying squid, since Japanese flying squid have no tentacle membranes

Fun fact but none of my characters have last names (or if they do have last names they are secret) so my Splatoon oc household in The Sims is just the “Splatoon household”

Is there like something else I can do so people don’t forget the orange parts of TP’s ears? I’m kinda at a loss for this bc I point it out multiple times yet it’s still super common for people to just not include it. It’s not shading her ears are literally that color.

Since Iota and Herm are distantly related, that probably means either Iota is part flying squid for Herm is part Humboldt. Another name for the Humboldt squid *is* the “jumbo flying squid” but I still think it’s Herm who’s part Humboldt. It’s a small enough part that it’s basically unnoticeable tho

Other random info: - Lynn’s zipcaster only has 3 fingers. This is bc their middle and index fingers fused together. - When I say TP is “semi-digitigrade” I mean that she’s perfectly capable of walking normally (plantigrade), the digitigrade walking is a conscious choice.

Maybe I should reopen my comms and actually add the option for Splatoon comms. I used to hold off unless something specifically asked bc I wasn’t confident in drawing Splatoon for others. Idk, I’ll think about it maybe #splatoon

If TP cut her own fins why are they completely normal in squid form. Why do Lynn’s squid form fins have a tear if their fins don’t have them. They have a torn *ear* though. If the fins on their body are meant to be the mantle fins of a flying squid, then why do the actual fins represent their ears
