In my podcast about Trust & Control, I'll discuss ways lines b/w human & AI "workers" are blurring. Corporations are calling AI agents "workers" alongside humans. They want continuous monitoring & verification of identity for everyday & WORK interactions. They say: Never trust. Always verify.

A post suggested to me from a 'content producer' who was recently fired from a cloud tech company with a typically obtuse description. Ends the post stating, "In the meantime, let me know if your company needs help with human or even AI-assisted writing." Sucks he was fired, but, oh boy.

Today, methods used by computers to measure trustworthiness of other computers (cryptography, zero trust) are beginning to be considered and applied to humans in deeper ways few are aware of, understand or have grappled with. My forthcoming podcast on 'trust measurement' digs into it - follow me!

How many "tech journalists" are reporting out stories about AI CEO spats while ignoring work of investigating how the systems those CEOs sell actually function, are used in real life and affect people? Yes, I realize it's not always a journo's decision what is reported, but we do have agency.

Nearly 5 ago while covering AI & data at Protocol, I noticed the massive Infrastructure Act funded controversial surveillance tech inside vehicles - stuff that attempts to detect driver impairment or distraction. It was already closer to reality in the EU at the time.

In today's newsletter from Anthropic's Jack Clark: "The vast majority of people I meet at frontier labs & around Silicon Valley now code entirely through AI systems...they use AI systems to write the tests & check the code...AI systems have gotten good enough to automate major component of AI R&D."

An overarching theme in "trust measurement" I am interrogating in my @oregonstate.edu fellowship-especially in relation to media, information & AI agent-to-agent interactions-is the idea of cryptographic verification replacing human relationships, something @newdesigncongress.org has also explored.

I know academics are worried about AI generated papers but the amount of human-written fly-by-night journals out there is already nuts. I am not an academic and have had one paper published at one academic conference and reviewed papers at a couple others. I got this today:

1/5 Just gave ChatGPT a test to see what it might dig up about me and my journalism/research over the years. Some info was accurate, but it also told me a key area of my work was digital media impacts on kids. It told me I have done academic research on the topic. FALSE.

Riveting story about editor discovering pitch was from AI reporter who had lots of AI articles already published. A real source in reporter's made-up story was OK w a falsified quote! Yes, Journalism has history of falsified stories, sources but we are entering new territory. Thoughts about trust:

When I first got heavy into baseball, a friend said, "Just wait till you start noticing pitches." To me it was kinda like being a guitar rock fan & finally paying attention to bass & drums. Annoying Google stats can't capture the weird wonder of the ball movements or the looks on hitters' faces.

1/3 I was just stood up. By an AI agent. I had an interview planned w a dude running an agentic AI startup who uses an AI agent to automate tasks. I waited & the source never got the call. While I assume he simply could not make it, I also got a confusing automated email from the agent.

Imagine if tech reporters reported more on how tech systems function - or don't...rather than reporting on the business machinations of tech execs and companies. This isn't always the journalist's decision of course, but I think about this a lot: how much more useful tech reporting could be.

When any organization qualifies the types of surveillance they refuse to do w terms such as “domestic” and “mass” all critical thinkers must ask why those qualifiers and what are they saying they are Ok to do?

Just a followup re: my author experience @facct.bsky.social this year - my interactions w my senior area chair have been great & it seems other chairs truly care about ensuring inclusion & a genuine review process. Part of problem is big increase in papers submitted. A growing pains problem.

Has anyone out there seen a definition of "mass surveillance" or "mass domestic surveillance" in relation to just "surveillance"? I've been marveling at media repetition of the term "mass surveillance" as though the other kind is not problematic.

In Portland, the Water Bureau is piloting an algorithmic pricing system to automate bill discount levels. I've reported extensively on this otherwise ignored project. Lawmakers in CA have introduced several bills to regulate algo pricing, a very nuanced area. My reporting and more on CA follows:
