Enjoying learning about birds and birding whilst getting as far away from the city as possible.
Birding on Saturday & Sunday inc visits to Buckton, Bempton and North Cave. First views of C. Tern, Sedge warbler and Housemartin. The wheatear’s are eluding me thus far.

Early finish Friday gave time to take a train/bus & walk to St Aidan’s and have a look at the beautiful Black-necked grebes assembling there. 7 of them having a right old scuffle at one point.

Wasn’t expecting a group of Barnacle geese to turn up on “my local patch” yesterday afternoon but fantastic to see them a 20min walk away. Worth the mud bath any day

*not sure i can really class it as my local patch if i only visit once or twice a week.

Scenic but soggy morning in Scarborough. Where else would you rather be than a wet cemetery looking for birds (and not doing it very well).

Post work train to Scarborough and a visit to St Mary’s church wasn’t so productive. No eastern black redstart for me today but such a wonderful bird should surely warrant a return trip.

CO2 emissions rose by a record amount in 2024. Terrible news. Warming is already affecting birdlife on the planet negatively & the damage is accelerating. To slow it we can stop flying, drive less, eat plant-based & consume less. Spread the word, be an example, keep talking & vote Green

An enjoyable days birding along the East coast. The walk from Bempton to Flamborough brought a number of Pied Fly's, Wheatear & Whinchat with a variety of hungry warblers. Nicely topped off with a smattering of Swifts overhead.

Hope you're well Mac & enjoying the weekend. I'm guessing you've visited Flam Seawatch Festival before? I'm currently scopeless but would love to go. Just wondering if it'd still be a worthwhile trip for me as I'm clueless about Seawatching.

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵

Labour’s great nature sellout is the worst attack on England’s ecosystems I’ve seen in my lifetime | George Monbiot
The horrifying planning bill, which rips up environmental protections, was drafted with CEOs in mind. We know because Keir Starmer told us, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot
