What if book reviews didn't operate under the 2 years of never logic? A very generous and critically incisive review of Zoological Surrealism penned by Erin Shevaughn Schlumpf is in the latest issue of SubStance, 54.3 (2025): 133-38.

changed my feline companion’s name to ゆめか yumeka 夢香 meaning sweet (in aroma) dream after meditating on a new name for her. she seems to respond to this beautifully. sometimes, I will shorten it and say “yume” 🌸☕️🐈

Botanical surrealism. What Jean Painlevé and montage were to the 20th century, Momoko Seto and compositing are to the 21st. An exploration of the strange beauty of plants and insects. Features the best mollusk love scene since Microcosmos (1996). At TIFF, Fri 9:30 am

Scholarly orgs based in the U.S. that purport to be "international" are going to need to come to terms with what it means to continue holding their in-person gatherings in a country many people cannot travel to or no longer feel safe visiting for all kinds of reasons.

didn’t get a chance to have any bagels in New York so instead i got a few bagels from the food-rich Montréal airport… these handmade blueberry bagels are so good… and simply comfort foods in bed in the next morning of an intercontinental long flight… 🫐🥯😸
